I am using Xandros 4.0 Home Edition Premium and I get no sound. I have two sound cards, one is a CS4xxx and the other is an Intel 536EP/w modem. The system recognizes the 536EP as my modem but does not work with my sound and neither does the CS4xxx. Help?

Linux often has problems with more than one sound system in the computer. If both are on plugin cards, remove one. If one of them is an onboard sound system, you can probably disable it in the BIOS setup.

Hi Richard, the Intel EP536 is a data, fax and voice modem. It is not a sound card, and will not function as one, although it can produce sound in conjuction with video confering setups in a Windows based computer. It seems extremely unlikely you will get this to work in Linux easily, if at all, in terms of the voice feature that is.

Now with respect to your soundcard, CS4xxx is Crystal Semiconductors, and has been an ongoing problem with many Linux distributions over the years. You make be able to get it working after jumping through hurdles, and getting down and geeky with it. I had a few rounds of efforts with this chip, IIRC it even worked with an older kernel version at some point for me, or someone I was trying to help.

My best suggestion before you try to pull through the struggle of getting it to work, is simply buy another PCI soundcard (used) that has a proven track record of working in Linux in general. SoundBlaster Live was good to me, I still have a few spares kicking around. If you would rather battle with the Crystal Semiconductor chipset, then prepare to learn and experience with some trial and error along the way. Let us know which path you choose, perhaps you prefer the easy fix (another soundcard), but if not maybe you can find the information to succeed in your endeavor with what you have to work with now.
