I tried to install a new video card, and the message I got was:

ERROR: You appear to be running an X server; please exit X before
installing.
I searched for solutions to shutting down x server, but havent found one that works, at least for me. Question

Well to answer your question about "shutting down the X server", you could probably get it to shutdown with Ctrl+Alt+F1 to switch to the first console, then enter the command:

/sbin/init 3

If that works you can install the drivers from a console presumably if you have the right instructions.

I don't know a thing about installing video drivers, except that I do know you can hose your system royally if you install something that wasn't designed for your system. Where did you get the drivers from? Are you sure they are designed to work with Xandros? If you look around this forum, you'll find that member redrum has prepared many video drivers for Xandros. I've never installed them since I've never needed them, but I know he's got a lot of satisfied "customers."

Thank you for the help. i tried shutting down x server as the nvidia site requested and still got the same result saying to shut down x server. so i moved on to next suggestion to try the Redrum drivers. followed instructions and the driver installed, got the new nvidia splash screen, all looked good, then online windows started to get confussed and slow down to drop dead speed, wonderfull. un installed driver, tried to reboot in expert to do xandrosxconfig --set-driver nvidia but it wouldnt let me type only control d worked. now i have uninstalled drivers and tried most of the otherones listed on Xandros 4.0/4.1 Nvidia Drivers 9631 and 100.14.19b +3D Howto, and i cannot get anywhere, now i have the dreaded stutter screen. would like to figure this out so i dont have to wake up with keyboard patterns on my face

Hi jwracepart and welcome to "Xandros" user forums!

Whats the brand and model of your videocard?
And which "Xandros" version are you using?
-"4.0" = kernel 2.6.15 UNI
-"4.1/4.2" = kernel 2.6.18 SMP
-"4.5" = 2.6.24 SMP

Precompiled drivers requires driver and kernel matching.
And "Nvidia" own drivers requires "Kernel Headers".

I installed a new video card on a desktop box. Replaced another Nvidia card. I ended up just reinstalling Xandros - which took less time than anything else. I know that's not what you want to do, but that was my answer. I could not get beyond the initial Xandros boot-up screen and safe video mode was of no value. Going to a console prompt also would not let me do anything. As if the computer lost it's mind. I put in a PCLinuxOS live disk and copied over some critical stuff to a mini external hardrive and reinstalled.

My critical stuff was only details of changes to some things that are outside of the user files, e.g., some weird printer stuff, changes to login screen etc, just so I could recreate the desktop like I liked it. All your user files can be retained when reinstalling. I think the whole operation - reinstall from disk, getting the updates from Xandros Networks and then configurating the desk top to my pedantic desires took ~2 hours, of which the longest period was the updates from XN. That's one of the things I like about Linux, brick up your system - fix pretty readily.

Im using an integrated "GeForce 6150" videocard with the
"dcc-nvidia-module-2.6.18-dcc-smp-redrum" (7.1.0.100.14.11)
driver. This combination works very well.

HI guys (Rerum, Doctore, successful user, anyone with 'the knowledge')...

Obviously the default installation has older versions of the nvidia driver built in.

1, Is it just a case of downloading and installing the DEB off redrums site and should be good to go (assuming the right one is selected) or is there any other 'tinkering' required as well?

2, Does the newly installed driver replace the default old one or does it appear as a removable in XN (in case its not the right one) and therefore makes it easy to install a get the right one without fear of destroying the system?

(I am trying to install an nVidia FX5200 or 4200ti and in both cases by current system freezes a few seconds in. Conclusion: drivers need updating before I give up)

As ever, all help is appreciated.

My befuddled memory indicates;

1 Load the selected driver from Redrum. I believe that on the recommended machine restart it modifies the kernel.

2 Going back is another matter. I never had to. Presumably you do the same with another driver either from Redrum or Xandros.

This is certainly all that I used to do, but, errors and omissions excepted of course.

Good luck,

martin welsh
