Hi all.
I am a complete Linux noob. I am trying to convert to Linux from Microsoft, but I am having so much trouble trying to get my head around Linux. I have an Asus EEE 701 laptop which came with Xandros and customising your desktop etc is fine. However, when you want to install some software or do something else, it's so hard to find the right commands to type. I've seen 'sudo' a number of times and 'always install in the root directory' etc etc. but what does it all mean?
Anyway, for the last 6 months, I have tried installing Half Life (the original game which doesn't require being connected to the internet). I have the CD which I bought with the game installed and I read somewhere that I just need to copy all the files and stick it on the Asus EEE. Ok, I've done that, but how do I install the game? What commands do I need to type? All information about installing games on Linux mentions DEB files but I don't have anything like that.
What exact steps would I need to take the files from the Half Life CD and install on my Asus EEE?
Thanks so much for your help.

Hi TekMate,
Many thanks for your post. I had a look through but the instructions are not for a Linux dunce like me. The first instructions are:
"First remove all traces of glide and mesa, then, Get the latest Device3Dfx driver from the cvs at glide.sourceforge.net and install those. Requered if you
run kernel 2.4.x...."
It goes on, but I have nooooo idea how you do these things.

I very much doubt that the asus ee701 would run such a game in any playable format. Perhaps its up to the odd flash based game but thats about it.
I used to play half life on Xandros 4.1 using crossover office, but you you could try using wine as an alternative. With a 2.2 GHZ processor, 1 MB ram and a 6600Gt graphics card, the game whilst just playable, was not a patch on running it under XP. Don't waste your time on this. _________________ Ubuntu - jaunty |
