Hi

There was some problem with my ISP ( StarHub.com) , accessing internet.
While solving that problem it seems they intentionally hacked my PC.

I rebooted the PC ; and there was a message "Insecure session" ( above my login field ). I logged-onto Xandros and the file system got corrupted.

I rebooted the PC and then its just hangs. NOT at all proceeding upto the DeskTop login prompt.

Then I rebooted the PC in "expert mode" ( Commandline);
now during boot-up , the following error message appeared :

Code:
 Software suspend 2.1.8.2. Missing or invalid storage location.
Pls correct and rerun lilo.

Am trying to GOOGLE and solve it...

I believe you can ignore that particular message as source to your hang. The message only implies you can not put your computer into sleep/suspend mode (if you use that feature) without some additional configuration.

I have exactly same message on my PC at work at each boot and it never hangs (at home my PC is configured for sleep/suspend and does not show that message).

Arne, I do not think univken can simply ignore this message based on the comment:

Quote:

From another post with similar problems, I have garnered a likely solution to this issue would be:

Code:
Try running the "Repair" option from the install CD. When booting from the install CD, press Spacebar, or Shift, depending on your version.

I believe he can. The message is normal if you have not added the resume2 LILO option in /etc/devices/cmdappend.inf and is harmless. The message itself may be the last thing he sees on the screen, but most certanly not an indication of the actual error.

Hi

Xandros 3.0 OCE and Windows-XP dual boot.

Single HDD ; 4 partitions

Partition-1 FAT where there are only three files:
initrd
linux
.volume.inf

Partition-2 WINDOWS-XP

Partition-3 ReiserFS ( Xandros)
Partition-4 tmpfs ( /dev/shm )

I guess that some file or settings used to boot Xandros is changed/deleted.
Because , when I had rebooted my PC and Xandros hanged on 4th line:

Code:

Preparing Xandros Desktop 3.0.2 OC
Loading kernel... done
Initializing kernel... done
Checking root file system... done

( hangs forever)

Then I had rebooted the PC in Expert mode.

Code:

.
.
.
Software suspend 2.1.8.2. Missing or invalid storage location (resume2= parameter). Please correct and rerun lilo (or equivalent) before suspending.
.
.
.

Missing module SFX     .....................sflashSFX.mod

And then it hangs

Code:

Detecting hardware ....

I need to do ^C , so that it will proceed and ask for root password, for maintenance.

How can I fix this issue , from being within root commandline mode ??
What command[s] to be run to resolve the issue ?

If I invoke X , it goes to a horizontal stripe at the top of a blank screen ; [ hangs forever]

Pls refer to this Xandros forum mesg:
[url]
http://forums.xandros.com/viewtopic.php?t=32049&highlight=&sid=7490ba3e3b89c557a3d8555d57cd7e68
[/url]

Following mesg. is from above URL:

Code:

Software Suspend 2.1.8.2: You need to use a resume2= command line parameter to tell Software Suspend 2 where to look for an image.
Software Suspend 2.1.8.2: Resume2 parameter is empty. Suspending will be disabled.
Software Suspend 2.1.8.2: Missing or invalid storage location (resume2= parameter). Please correct and rerun lilo (or equivalent) before suspending.

I loaded Xandros 3.0 OCE Live-CD/Install-CD in CD drive; restart PC (with boot-from-CD as first option); I am NOT able to boot in live-mode; no such option displayed to boot into live-mode.

Pressed "Shift" -> resulted in 10 options:
8 ) Restore
9 ) Rescue

"Rescue" didn't help
"Restore" -> said "No Xandros Install found" !!!!!

Code:

The message is normal if you have not added the resume2 LILO option in /etc/devices/cmdappend.inf and is harmless. - Arne Anka

Pls let me know how to add resume2 LILO option.

I will post complete dmesg output.

Several causes for that issue are having USB devices plugged in during the boot.

Also, SATA controllers.

Its odd that Xandros does not find the installation.

Another thing you may need to do, is to boot into a console from the Xandros CD, and run reiserfsck --fix-fixable on the Xandros partition 3.

To be able to use that option you must know the name of the partition for the swap file system (my is named /dev/sda1). If possible, run

cat /proc/swaps

from a console and paste the result in here and I'll tell you what to do next (sometimes the swap is located in a file rather than a partition).

NOTE-1) :

NOTE-2):
-------------
If I manually invoke command X ( X server) ,
#/root: X
( goes into Graphics mode ; but hangs with a 2cm height stripe at the top of the screen )
It seems corrupted ( X window files) kde files ! I want to fix the current installation - as I had spent more time to compile & install many tools & utilities.

The "restore" option with bootable CD says " No XANDROS install found".

NOTE-3)
----------
File list in /dev/hda1 ( FAT):

Following are the files in this partition:
linux , initrd, .volume.info
Are any file[s] missing in this boot partition ?

NOTE-4)
------------
If MBR is missing in /dev/hda6 , then how to fix it ( using lilo)?

lilo syntax:
Code:

usage: lilo [ -C config_file ] -q [ -m map_file ] [ -v N | -v ... ]
       lilo [ -C config_file ] [ -b boot_device ] [ -c ] [ -g | -l | -L ]
            [ -F ] [ -i boot_loader ] [ -m map_file ] [ -d delay ]
            [ -v N | -v ... ] [ -t ] [ -s save_file | -S save_file ]
            [ -p ][ -P fix | -P ignore ] [ -r root_dir ] [ -w | -w+ ]
       lilo [ -C config_file ] [ -m map_file ] -R [ word ... ]
       lilo [ -C config_file ] -I name [ options ]
       lilo [ -C config_file ] [ -s save_file ] -u | -U [ boot_device ]
[b]       lilo -A /dev/XXX [ N ]      inquire/activate a partition[/b]
       [b]lilo -M /dev/XXX [ mbr | ext ]   install master boot record[/b]
       lilo -T help          list additional options
       lilo -X            internal compile-time options
       lilo -V [ -v ]         version information

NOTE: 5) List partitions in a HDD:
----------------------------------------
Code:

lilo -A /dev/hda      # -> displays only one partition /dev/hda2
/dev/hda2              #  instead of  /dev/hda2  and /dev/hda6

NOTE-6)
-----------

When XANDROS failed to load, the contents of /boot/boot.0300

[code]#strings boot.0300
sQOtN2
t+a`j
Invalid partition table
Error loading operating system
Missing operating system

#lilo -v ## this generated a file boot.0300
boot.0300

[code]
#strings boot.0300 ## now the strings command gives a different output:
LILO
LILOu)^h
`UUfP
fPYX
[/code]

BUT , at one time , the strings command resulted in no output
#strings boot.0306
<NULL output>

So now which is the correct file: boot.0300 or boot.0306 ?

thanks in advance!

"Strange" problems sometimes occours when mixing several
"Primary" and "Logical" partitions on the same harddrive.

Such issues are rare with maximum four "Primary" partitions. Or,
one "Primary" and another "Extended" plus "Logical" partitions.

Heres an wellworking partitiontable:
HDA1 Primary NTFS (Windows 2K/XP partition)
HDA2 Primary FAT32 (Shared Windows and Linux partition)
HDA3 Primary EXT3 (Linux Root and Home partition)
HDA4 Primary SWAP (Linux Swap partition)

Or another when "Linux" is more important:
HDA1 Primary NTFS (Windows 2K/XP partition)
HDA2 Primary EXT3 (Linux Root partition)
HDA3 Primary EXT3 (Linux Home partition)
HDA4 Primary SWAP (Linux Swap partition)

unviken,

with the information provided you can try one of following thwo methods.

First
-----

In lilo boot menu, got the menu entry you want to execute and press the TAB key. At the end of the line appearing, add

resume2=swap:/dev/hda5

and press return to proceed the boot.

Second
---------

Open /etc/devices/cmdappend.inf as root. In there you should find a line looking something like this (it may look a bit different on your system, but you get the idea)

append=vga=791 quiet rw acpi=on

at the end of that line add

resume2=swap:/dev/hda5

so at the end the line looks something like

append=vga=791 quiet rw acpi=on resume2=swap:/dev/hda5

save the file and run

detect reset
detect probe

Ffter this you should be able to find the line above also in /etc/lilo.conf

===========================================
Arne !

The size of swap file ( /dev/hda5)system is just 582 MB !!!
I think this is not suffice !
tmpfs 582728 0 582728 0% /dev/shm

The contents of /etc/devices/cmdappend.inf file is ( just 2 lines):
Code:

XANSG7:/#cat /etc/devices/cmdappend.inf
[cmdappend]
append=rw acpi=on

Btw, whats Software Suspend and resume2= ... ?
Is it similar to Hibernation or Or Standby mode in Windows ?
First of all , how my LINUX system enterd into "suspend" mode?

===========================================

I can see the LINUX file-system , if I boot with a live-CD;
( Xandros Live-CD , didn't go into live mode ! this is strange ! )
How to make it boot into live mode ?

I don't want to re-install , Xandros 3.0 , as I have spent lot of time
compiling and installing various tools/utilities in the current set-up.

THere are 2 PROBLEMs with the current installation:

PROBLEM-1)
---------------

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.11-x1
label=Xandros_Desktop_3.0.2_OC
vga=0xf04
root=/dev/hda6
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.6.11-x1.gz
append="quiet rw acpi=on "
.
.
.

On selecting Xandros_Desktop 3.0.2 OC -> Boot message

Code:
Preparing Xandros Desktop 3.0.2 OC
Loading kernel... done
Initializing kernel... done
Checking root file system... done

It hangs at this point ( PROBLEM-1)

Problem is with MBR of /dev/hda6 ?
OR
Problem is with the /boot/ map file ?
OR both ?
How to create a correct map file , using lilo ?

Running the strings command on the map file =>
XANSG7:/boot# strings map |more
Xandros_Desktop_3.0.2_OC
Safe_Video_Mode
Configure_(Expert)
Windows
LILO
LILOu
'MAGEu
&8'd
?LILOu
tp< r
.
.

PROBLEM-2)
=========

If I select Expert-mode and goto command line,
there are these 3 ISSUEs:
- Software suspend issue ...
- boot sequence hangs at this point => Hardward Detection ( I need to press Ctrl-C) so that it will reach a point and ask for root password for maintenance.
- once I get root prompt and invoke X ( i.e X windows system),
the screen goes dark with only a horizontal stripe at the top.
( system hangs.)

thanks in advance!

Depends how much RAM you have, but usually it is sufficent (that's the default most Linux computers use).

Just replace "append=rw acpi=on" with "append=rw acpi=on resume2=swap:/dev/hda5" and run

detect reset
detect probe

univken wrote:

Software Suspend is a kernel function that makes it possible to put a computer in hibernation or standby mode. The resume2 kernel options tells the Software Suspend function where to store the RAM image when hibernating.

univken wrote:

You have NOT entered suspend mode. The message you see has nothing to do with what mode you are running it. It just tells you, if you want to be able to hibernate, resume2 must be specified. If hibernation is of NO interest to you, you can ignore the Software Suspend message all together (it does not cause any harm and is not an issue).

In such case I would suggest you switch to a console with e.g. "CTRL-ALT-F1" or "CTRL-ALT-F2" and look at the bottom of /var/log/Xorg.0.log and see what it says.

Hi

Version: Xandros OCE 3.0

1) If I choose "RESTORE" option when using a Xandros-live-CD,
will it OVERWRITE or PRESERVE the applications installed from root (i.e applications installed / configurations & customizations made using "root" priviliege) ?

{ The dictionary meaning for "Restore" is
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/restore }

Its a known fact that using "Restore option in Windows" will result in
latest updates.

2) When choosing "Rescue" mode , what commands can be used to
fix MBR for a particular partition ?

3) How to Restore or Rescue only
i) X file system ( Xorg , etc )
ii) /boot/boot & /boot/map
iii) Fix Hardware detection ( as the Boot process hangs @ Starting hardware detection)

Is Xandros Firewall ( fee based) available for Xandros OCE 3.0 or 4.5 OCE versions?

There is no similarities between Xandros and Windows restore features. In case of Xandros, no applications you have installed or configuration you have altered will be changed. Nobody knows exactly what Restore actually does, but whatever it does it is not much (I would guess it only fixes the LILO and nothing more).

The only way I know how to restore those is by using apt-get. If you know what packages contains the code dealing with "i", "ii" and "iii", use

apt-get --reinstall install <packge names>

This of course assumes you have network connection or at least a proper installation CD and CD enabled in XandrosNetworks.
