Hi there,
I'm currently working with Xandros 4.1 and I'm wondering if and when a minor or major release update will be deployed.
Is there a time line?
On the one hand I really appreciate if there is not a new minor release a few days after I installed the latest version of a software, but in this case it feels to me as if there is no more work in developing and improving Xandros.
I'm ready to be patient if I know that things will go on and a new release will be rolled out in some time.
Please be honest. I am going to set up a new system as home working station, and if I know that there will be an update only in a large amount of months or even no update, I would choose Debian. But I made such good experiences with Xandros that I really would prefer to install this.
Is it possible to satisfy my curiosity?
Regards,
Dieter |

Nope. Xandros doesn't tell us much about what they're up to. I assume there will be a Xandros 5, as Xandros was apparently involved in the development of KDE 4, and it wouldn't make much sense to work on KDE if you're not intending to use it. But a time line? Sorry.

Hi there,
I just have been to the CeBIT Trade Fair in Hannover/Germany and (of course) visited the Xandros stand.
The core business seems to be the Xandros Server and Scalix. Ok, that's clear, because a company can earn more money by selling software to other companies.
I could not resist to ask for a Xandros Desktop update, and yes, there will be one in approx. two months. It will be named 4.5, but the guy seemed not to be that much eager to tell me what will be new in it (or he was not allowed to).
Anyway, I was happy to hear this. Let's see if the schedule can be hold (Sales People often tell things that the Service People have to correct later on ), but if not, it would be ok for me, too. Most important for me is, that the Desktop is still being worked on and not dead.
So let's exercise ourselves in patience. Things will improve.
Regards
Tuvok |

Well. I was a big supporter of Xandros. Not anymore. I think the writing is on the wall. It is ridiculous that little to no updates have been posted over the last year. I paid for several versions of Xandros. Starting with version 2. Was a premium member for 2 years. If I receive something for free...my expectation is less. I paid and received nothing it is much higher.
Xandros had a chance to be a premier distro and blew it. Now the only person that runs this distro in my family is grandma. I was opposed to jumping on the ubuntu train (and gnome) at one time. Not anymore. Works perfect and resolves everything that I need.
I sure hope they get refocused and get v5, 4.5, or maybe an update to Thunderbird, Firefox, Open Office, or any other debian security issues fixed one day. But... I am not betting on it.... |

A possibly hopeful sign is that all versions of Xandros Desktop except for the download version of Xandros Desktop Professional are listed as Out of Stock.
In the meantime, I have stopped recommending Xandros as a viable operating system option when people ask. I'm still using my patched version of 4.0 Premium, but it'll be on the chopping block the next time I upgrade hardware -- I really don't want to reinstall and then have to spend time patching it together again. Xandros really needs to stop treating it's customers like mushrooms. |

Xandros have a release cycle of two years, and it's too long. Nothing happened with updates for several months, and the network was sometimes down for hours, sometimes days.
So I moved from Xandros to Debian to Ubuntu to Fedora, and now I'm very satisfied.
But at least I'm grateful to Xandros for one thing, they encouraged me to move from Windows to Linux. _________________ Xandros Pro 4.1 on AMD Athlon XP 2000+ |

"Fedora", "Mandriva", "Suse", "Ubuntu" (and many other distributions)
have fast release cycles, which satisfies some users. While other prefers
longer release intervalls.
The "Debian Sarge" based "Xandros Desktop 4.0-4.2" should have been
replaced at the same time "Debian Etch" reached "Stable" status. But only
"Server" was updated then. The "Etch" based "Desktop" was released one
year later - strangely, without even doing it officially...
Anyway - The shrinked "XD 45-OC CD" more than fullfills my needs.
