When installing Xandros 4.1 you will now have two options.
The first is installing via the Installation CD.
This will install the SMP Kernel.

The second is booting from the Applications CD.
You will eventually be prompted to insert the Installation CD but it will install the Uni Processor kernel.

If you have issues install please try both installation methods incse your system is having issues with the SMP kernel.

hi - i have a dell xps 1210 notebook. i had xandros 3.0.2 oc installed succesfully...upgraded to pro 4.1 and can't get it installed. i tried both ways, installing from the install disk and then installing from the application disk and inserting the install disk at the prompt. either way its the same deal...when it reboots and i select xandros desktop 1) it still says its 3.0.2 oc 2) loads kernel..ok 3) initializing kernel........forever! hangs there everytime, its been initializing the kerenl over an hour this time. i reformatted the hdd partition i'm using each time to not cause further problems. i'm using intel t7400 proc (2.16ghz) w 2gb ram on a 160 gb hdd with roughly 40 gb partitioned for linux. i was (will be again) dual booting with win xp mce. whole reason i need to upgrade is trying to get my wireless to work. looking at the forums, it seems most people are using version 4 who have successfully installed ndis wrappper or fwcutter...i couldn't get either to work with 302 oc - granted this could be because i'm new to (suck at) linux. but now i bought this upgrade so i need to make it work and i need to get the wireless up and running - using a broadcom bcm4328 wireless card................
PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!

What is the difference between SMP kernel and uni kernel? I'm kind of new to Linux.

Thanks,

"UNI-kernel" is for single-core and "SMP-kernel" for dual-core processors.

aaronleishman, if you're doing a new install, you might as well install the SMP kernel. Uni is for one processor only, while SMP can be considered to be for one or more processors. Most of us have installed the SMP kernel, even if we only have one processor.

If your system only has one processor with a single core, it normally wouldn't matter which kernel you install - smp or uni. But for some device drivers there may only be a uni kernel driver or an SMP kernel driver. My wireless 802.11b card has an rt2400 chipset on it and it will only work with the uni kernel. The card is old and the people supporting the driver won't be updating it to use the smp kernel (last I heard). It's a lot of work for little benefit.

So I have to install the uni kernel on a system with these cheap but very cheerful wireless cards in them.

hi, I'am newbee when it comes to linux softwares are concerned. I am fed up with microsoft systems and trying to find the next best thing. I've tried fedora 10, 11 and 12. and found the systems to techinical with in always having to consult our IT guys and spend most of the time trying to figure out how to correct problems encountered by my x80n Asus lap top with same. I stumbled upon xandros while surfing for more stable applications in linux. i downloaded your trial version if the hopes the it will live out what was advtertised, a stable application that will be able to interface with windows. i was dissapointed upon installing your product.

1) upon installation it would seem that, it did not had support for wireless drivers of aetheros wifi.
2) nor did it have any support for my LAN card.
3)worst it did not recoginize my CD/DVD rom. "Making it impossible to upgrade and install other programs associated with the windows.

I am currently looking at your 4.5 oce application. please confirm right now if i would have the same problems...

So far, from what ive experienced with xandros, it is not worth changing to your system. Please convince me otherwise....
