I have a Viewsonic VX2025wm attached to my motherboard's DVI output. I have four identical machines, so switching to a different card is not an option.
The motherboard uses Intel's 82865G chipset, which seems to be a couple of years old. I would have expected Xandros to support it without issue, but I cannot change the resolution. The graphics work well (fast, smooth) althought there are color gltiches in OpenOffice that look rather 1980s. The driver information says:
Driver: i810
Driver Loaded: no

Please help, these large fonts are killing me... Sad)

this problem is very common with intel cards.
you'll have to use a debian package to patch this! look up in your xandros networs about intel graphics cards drivers. there should be a package called 865resolution or 915resolution. alternatively, you can download the package at e.g. rpmseek.com. you'll have to intall this package and configure it. than you'll be able to use your monitors native resolution.
I had the same problem with an intel card and I solved it.
when you got problems with configuring the patch, post it!

I've worked with the tech support people, but have ended with the answer that the hardware, both montior and graphics chip 865GV, support 1600x1050x32, but the driver does not. Even with the 915resolution now part of Xandros, it won't do it.

I don't want to waste my kids four montiors and computers with crappy resolution, so does anyone have a better driver for the 865GV?

Thanks!

Did you triy both "855resolution" and "915resolution",
available in "Xandros Networks" without results?
Quote:
resolution modification tool for Intel graphic chipset
resolution modification tool for Intel graphic chipset
915resolution is a tool to modify the video BIOS of the 800
and 900 series Intel graphics chipsets. This includes the 845G,
855G, and 865G chipsets, as well as 915G, 915GM, and 945G chipsets.
This modification is necessary to allow the display of certain
graphics resolutions for an Xorg or XFree86 graphics server.

915resolution's modifications of the BIOS are transient.
There is no risk of permanent modification of the BIOS.
This also means that 915resolution must be run every time the
computer boots in order for its changes to take effect.
If you want to automatically set the resolution on each boot
and before X is launched, see /usr/share/doc/915resolution/README.Debian
for information about configuring the provided initscript.

I did not try 855resolution, as it seems that 915 is just further along than 855. Either way, the 865GV is supporting the resolution now, but the driver is not using it. I guess I really don't know. I don't understand what 915resolution is for, as when the machine is running XP, it runs in 1600x1050 without issue. So, the card and monitor both support the resolution, so (to me) the only thing would be the driver not calling the right mode. I thought that was the purpose of 915resolution, to call the right mode, but the support guy said that the driver didn't support this resolution.

Quote:
Hello Frank,

The reason in this case it is not supported is not the hardware so much
as the drivers for this hardware available in Linux.
I can understand how the Windows XP drivers have quite a few resolutions
available, the Linux drivers are limited unfortunately.
You can maybe hack a way to get it to work however this is outside of my
area of support.
That message in the logs indicates that the VESA mode doesn't support
the virtual space mode. This is an older support feature and not
applicable here, therefore it's not a concern.

Hello Frank,
Ok so I wrote the xorg.conf file with all the modes supported by your
monitor, but I think in this case you'll have to use the 915resolution
command to set it to a higher one than 1024x768.
You can try running the command in console with something like:
915resolution 1280 1024 32

Then Ctrl-Alt-Backspace.

Hello Frank,

Here's the dilemma, your Videocard can't support 1600x1050 in this case.
When you run the 915resolution -l that lists all the available display
modes your card can handle.

Please, post your "/etc/X11/xorg.conf".

Here is the file, and this is the email he sent with the file:

Quote:
Hello Frank,

>From this output it's telling us the modes that your video chipset can
handle. In this case 1920x1440, 1600x1200, 1280x1024, 1024x768, 800x600
and 640x480.

Upon looking at what your monitor is able to handle, then I can see how
you are looking to use the full widescreen effects of this monitor.
Your limitation here is in fact your video chipset which doesn't support
those modes (in Linux specifically).

What I've done at this point is modify a custom xorg.conf file which you
can place in your /etc/X11 folder (*note that it is case sensitive).
So make a backup of your existing /etc/X11/xorg.conf file by typing
(from a root console):
cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.bak

Then save the one I have attached to that location.
I modified it to have the exact specifications for your monitor and
video chipset, what is configured there is what your system can handle.

Well, your "/etc/X11/xorg.conf" seems OK.

Have experienced similar issues with Windows (!) where the integrated "Intel" video card
didnt support widescreen monitors. Try latest "MEPIS", "PCLinuxOS, "Ubuntu" or similar
distribution to verify its an "Linux" driver issue. If thats the situation, one solution would be
to install an old PCI or AGP (nvidia based, if preferrable) video card.

Thanks.
Do you mean I should install Ubuntu or other OS, or just grab the driver?

even if you install ubuntu you will have the problem!!
the solution of your problem is 915resolution, but after you install it, you have to configure it: change as root to the folder /etc/default/
there sould be a file 915resolution. change there the contents:

mode=3c
XRESO=1600
YRESO=1050
BIT=32

and save the file. then login as root in KDE and change the voideo modes to the same resolution/colordepth.
after a reboot, you should have the right resolution!
