Summary: Helix and RealPlayer for Linux v11 are now available
Project: player

The RealPlayer 11 for Linux and its underlying fully open source Helix Player 11 are now both available. The RealPlayer 11 for Linux has many new features including support for playing Windows Media content on Linux. There is an integrated Playlist Editor and support for Perfect Play (Superbuffer). ALSA and surround sound playback are now supported also.

You can download the new RealPlayer for Linux here: http://www.real.com/linux

You can download Helix Player 11 (RPM, BIN and Source) from the Helix Community Downloads page here: https://player.helixcommunity.org/2005/downloads/index.html

Has anyone had a chance to try it? Sounds like it would be quite helpful to some of the multimedia issues I've had.

Have testinstalled both "Helix Player 11" and "RealPlayer 11" (RPM). Seems
to work. Altough you may have to create their shortcuts by yourself:
    /opt/helix/HelixPlayer/hxplay.bin
    /opt/real/RealPlayer/realplay.bin

I hate when this happens.....

I tried to install the RPMs.

I tried RealPlayer and got this in Xandros Networks:
Quote:
realplayer_11.0.0.4028-20080226_i386.deb generated
Xandros Networks has detected the following error:
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 127
Xandros Networks detected errors while processing the following file(s):
realplayer
Xandros Networks has detected that dpkg has returned with error code (1)
Please retry your installation.
Done.

Then when I tried Helix i got this:
Quote:
helixplayer_11.0.0.4052-20080319_i386.deb generated
1 not fully installed or removed.
Xandros Networks has detected the following error:
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 127
Xandros Networks has detected the following error:
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 127
Xandros Networks detected errors while processing the following file(s):
realplayer
helixplayer
Xandros Networks has detected that dpkg has returned with error code (1)
Please retry your installation.
Done.

I guess I should say this from now on-- I'm using Xandros Desktop 4.1 (not Eee) --- since some new things actually work on the Eee.

Advice appreciated.

Strange. Experimented on the old "XD4.1/4.2" version. Converted "RPM"
using "Alien" in "Console" first and then "dpkg -i <package.deb>":
Code:
COMPUTER:~/helix# alien HelixPlayer-11.0.0.4052-20080318.i586.rpm
helixplayer_11.0.0.4052-20080319_i386.deb generated

COMPUTER:~/helix# dpkg -i helixplayer_11.0.0.4052-20080319_i386.deb
Selecting previously deselected package helixplayer.
(Reading database ... 114422 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking helixplayer (from helixplayer_11.0.0.4052-20080319_i386.deb) ...
Setting up helixplayer (11.0.0.4052-20080319) ...

COMPUTER:~/helix# /opt/helix/HelixPlayer/hxplay.bin

This worked.

Hi Doc

The question is....

.....did it work?

I have performed the same (download of RPM, alien convert to DEB, dpkg install, and got the silent summary), but then Im at a loss.

I tried doubleclicking to launch the 'realplay' script in the /opt directory and get an error.

After doing the install as yo suggest, how does one launch the realplayer successfully?

(I am X4.1)

Thanks

I should add firther comments in anticipation of your reply.

First, it is true that I tried the REALPLAYER version (not HELIX).
Secondly, I have tried installing the REALPLAYER default supplied DEB package from the website, but that fails install with 'LSB 3.1 required but 3.0-9dcc2 is installed' (ooh, so close!)

My reason for wanting the latest realplayer is that is plays .ASX windows player files and streams (functionality introduced in version 11).

So further questions:

1, does the Helix player (assuming you got it working as per my first question) play ASX files (trydownloading this link http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/wm_asx/aod/radio2_hi.asx using it to play)
2, Any way of updating the LSB library to 3.1

Hope you can help

Thanks again

Jim

It is isn't quite what you asked, but I have been using this:
http://www.iplayerconverter.co.uk/choose_aod.aspx, getting the conversion to real audio with mplayer and then recording as .wav and saving, before finally converting to mp3 qith audacity.

It goes like this:
1. get the program ID of the one you want

2. get the conversion and then do in console
Code:
mplayer -cache 2048 -bandwidth 9999999 "rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk:554/radio3coyopa/radio_3_-_sunday_1600.ra" -vc null -vo null -ao pcm:fast:waveheader:file=FILENAME.wav
make sure you delete everything in the conversion listing after the .ra. The example is choral evensong from BBC3

3. open the wav file with audacity and convert to mp3

Thanks for the offering Arnold. It is true though that it doesnt have relevance really,ut thanks anyway.

I am aware of the iplayerconverter site and the BBC radio playing options generally. MY interest is in the LIVE STREAM of the radio: currently the stations are streamed in both Real (rtsp) and WM (mms) form and I enjoy the Real stream (for various reasons, least alone that I can use Realplayer which itself brings benefit to me and various use of tailor made script on my system). However, in March the BBC will be turning off completely the real stream and availability for all radio programs, leaving only the WM mms feed.

I would like the latest version of Realplayer so that I can play that WM mms stream with Realplayer (as Realplayer 11 offers) and thereby avoiding complications in script and system changes. (Further more, the option of conversion to MP3, as youve kindly suggested, does not help with my LIVE stream feed (realtime listening)).

So, here's hoping the Doctore (or other) can offer answers to my questions. I would REALLY like t get Realplayer v11 working.

I was able to get realplayer 11 working with X4 by downloading the .bin file and running that as root to do the install. Neither the rpm or deb worked,

Arnold, just out of interest, the original recording with mplayer: does it work by playing and recording in real time? ie, if your program is a 1 hour program, does it stream it in and record it and takes 1 hour, or does it do the recording faster (because its not playing in real time)?

Hi Tekmate, Im envious of you.

I have tried the BIN install myself (based on your experience) and found a few problems. First of all on of the scripts involved had a format of a command that was invalid (incorrect syntax) and required changing just run correctly. After finally getting it to run completely without error and install, the Realplayer 11 doesnt actually work because I get an error about "g_type_register_static_simple" symbol not being set.

I think this is something to do with a GLIB library (glib2-2.12) according to some forum found (my Xandros only has 2.10.2). So my question is, does your install work? And if so, why yours and not mine? Does it have anything to do with your updated libraries that you did to install Firefox 3 (do you include glib)? I so, what do you suggest I can do to update that library alone?

I am still yet to take on the procedure of perform an update of everything to enable the FF3,0 as posted by yourself on aother thread, and have to wait for a specific more opportune moment (computer availability, backups, time etc etc required). Meantime, maybe you can suggest the update of this library to at least enable this realplayer install.

Appreciate and help ou can offer.

Ok. Tekmate (and others interested), I have a result.

I took the plunge and added all sources as posted in your Firefox update posting to my sources list. As it happens the only source required was

deb http://www.geekconnection.org xandros4 main

I added this the XN sources list, did a refresh, and searched for GLIB2. It appeared with an UPDATE option to v2.12.2-1 which suffices the realplayer requirements. I clicked UPDATE, and it updated the library accordingly without a problem.

Note (to others): this does require LIBC6 at 2.3.2-dsl21 and I already have this at dsl22 which is sufficient. I think this is because I have since upgraded it in the past although my memory is not so good and maybe this upgrade was performed when I was running Xandros v3. If you have not upgraded this, and it was needed for X4, then I think you might have a problem as perhaps the original version from Xandros is too low (but I am not sure).

Anyway, updated, and installed realplayer using the BIN download. There is a problem, as I said before, with the script though.

First, using XN, remove the existing Realplayer 10.

Then

1, From root console, download and run the install

./RealPlayer11GOLD.bin

2, After it EXTRACTS the files, and BEFORE CONTINUING with the answers to the install, go to the home directory, and you should find the extracted files in HXSETUP.
3, Go to the POSTINST folder and edit the script 'functions'.
4, Find the line beginning (line number 60 and 62):
AS_USER="su $LOGNAME -c -- " and
AS_USER="su $USER -c -- "
5, REMOVE the last characters (3 hyphens and space) "-- "
6, Save the script.
7, Continue with the questions in the console window to complete the installation

And that was it, it installed and even added the menus.

Now the funny bit for me. After going through all this, it seems that it still does not recognise and play Windows Media STREAMS (files ending .ASX or streams with protocol MMS:). So after it all it doesnt benefit me particularly.

I didn’t have to change the download script myself but the updated libraries it looks like you answered that yourself as I inadvertently made things easier on myself by updating to FF 3
