|
|
Samsung printers come with a Linux install disk.
Do not install using the Samsung printer install disk in Xandros!
The samgsung printer install disk will destroy wireless internet, and possibly other things. It wants to set up your system to print everything as root. Which is a really really bad idea.
So here's how to do it the right way:
1. Put in the Samsung install disk. It will only run it if you give the install script execute priviledges and we are not going to so that.
2. Open an admin console. Navigate on the CD to /Linux/i386/at_root/usr/lib/cups/filter/rastertosamsungspl
Right click on this file and click "copy".
Navigate to /usr/lib/cups/filter/ and paste this file (rastertosamsungspl) you copied.
3. You need the model number for your printer, then navigate to /Linux/noarch/at_opt/share/ppd/ and copy the file for your printer (e.g. ML-2510spl2.ppd for the ML-2510) somewhere, e.g., onto Desktop.
You only need the ppd file for your printer model.
4. Go to control centre and perpherals-printers. Right click and "add printer". Navigate to where you saved the ppd file and use that to install the printer.
(The ppd file ends up in /usr/share/cups/model/samsung/ .
5. Print a test page if you want to prove it works. This installation procedure works if the printer is attached to your printer or if it is networked. I printed successfully from a wireless notebook to a desktop with printer attached as well as other variation.
Notes. If you plug in the printer, the add printer wizard thingy will come up and you can install the printer driver that way too. You can also get the ppd file directly from the Samsung disk, and install the printer that way, but seeing as you have to get the rastertosamsungspl file, might as well copy them both over.
The Samsung install disk is a real disaster, It fooled me into to using it (I was thinking "wow, a Linux install disk, that's cool" -- NOT!)and I had to do a full reinstall of Xandros. Just get your two files off of it and label it as dangerous! _________________ War doesn't determine who's right - only who's left. |

Good Info..
I had seen this before in the Ubuntu forum. Too bad you had to find out by baptism of fire. I remember the trouble you had previous. So now you are the resident Samsung expert....
I have been looking at the Samsung Color Laser since you gave it high marks. It seems to be fairly well received with the exception of speed and the paper feeder.

I am considering one.

I'll move it with a shadow. I was thinking people would go to "printers", but you're right about where it really belongs. I suspect this model would do a good job. 4 ppm is slow; if there's one that even does 6, you would notice a difference. Money is always the problem though. _________________ War doesn't determine who's right - only who's left. |

I guess I'm just lucky. Wireless is fine. Didn't lose anything. Driver is installed on my t40 thinkpad. I let the Linux install disk work. Only problem I had was that "properties" was blank. I opened the Printer Wizard and installed again. That's when I was able to get to "properties" and share it on the network. _________________ Rich |

I would say you are lucky. Nevertheless, the samsung install disc will have changed some permissions on some root/admin things to be executed and deleted by anyone, i.e., root file system will have been altered. It is quite possible that they have updated some aspects of the driver disks to eliminate the worst side effects. Please report if anything else doesn't run quite right on your system. _________________ War doesn't determine who's right - only who's left. |

Thanks for the input, Jim. I'll keep a close watch and report any anomalies.
BTW, I've downloaded the 4.5 OCE but haven't burned it yet. Is there anything I should know, other than, "don't blow away my current system till I've tried it?"
