So far, so good! Thank you Jim & Doctore for input & other Forum Members on standby. Another Question folks!

How would I go about installing the Latest Linux Kernel to Xandros? Is it possible? What to expect as far as pros & cons?

Thank you very much!

Pepper

Is it possible? The short answer would be no. That said, I think some of the experts here have replaced the kernel on some versions of Xandros, although I'm not sure about X4.

I guess the pros would be that you would then have support for newer hardware, and some other new features. The cons are that some, or many, or all Xandros-specific features might not work anymore.

I did a little searching. aldube gives the details on how he updated the kernel here;

I don't understand much of it.

Jim

I'm not sure if it still works, that was the pre-service pack method.

The CONs would probably outweigh the PRO's as you disable some Xandros funtionality like in XFM when you do it.

If you need updated nVidia drivers, then it's simply better to compile the new drivers using the current Xandros Linux kernel. Wink

You can certainly do it, but it would be some work adding the extra driver packs that come with Xandros...

Perhaps once the next version is about middle-aged I might put together a prebuilt kernel and 'driver pack', but this version is too outdated to make it worth my while, since I'm sure X5 will be coming out soon..

To do it "the right way" a proficient builder knowledgeable in how Xandros does things (which not to toot my own horn, but excluding myself there are probably maybe only 2 or 3 people outside of Xandros that know the undocumented features of Xandros well enough to do so and have it "just work" like the original) could probably pull it off, but the task to do it all would need about 20 hours to build and repackage everything, and then they would need to test it for a long time on a lot of different hardware to make sure everything worked as it did before.. Since I know of no one who fits that catagory and has infinite access to hardware, including the latest hardware, they would have to guess some and there would be no 100 percent certainty that your setup would not be a useless doorstop after the upgrade..

My conservative suggestion is to wait until X5 comes out..

There are of course ways to hack it too, of course, but you'd loose the ability to seamlessly swap hardware at will like before the upgrade and if you're not careful, it could easily hose the install on your box..

Does anyone , know anything? Somebody has to know something. Can someone from xandros at least post on the forum that they are at least considering Xandros 5? I wonder why they could not at least take the version of xandros which came on eeepc and release it as at least 4.5? As Dr. Evil from the Austin Powers movie said; Throw us a frickin bone here! Confused Laughing Wink

Made some tests last year and updated my "Xandros 4.1" to "V4.5" using
"Xandros4/Server2-Distribution Sites" plus "Server2 Unsupported Site".
All worked, but got problems with the network connection. It was not that
difficult at all. At least they could have made an unofficial unsupported "Beta"
or an whatever "Testing" version, to keep up the interest for "Desktop OS".
So, the question remains - why not?

maybe we should start a letter writing campaign. Does anyone know an email address at xandros we could write to that might get attention?

I have no super secret info on V5 unfortunately.. Sad

The only thing I know for sure (and this is from other sources, not through Xandros directly) is that they were chomping on the bit for a final version of KDE 4 to come out (presumably so they could integrate it into X5, but again, I cannot be sure of that). That is all I know to this point.

It's my understanding KDE 4 is very buggy so if Xandros is planning on using that for ver 5 it may still be a long wait.

SarahsDad, look her: http://forums.xandros.com/viewtopic.php?t=30583
Get some answer by scrolling down a bit. All the changes "Xandros" does
to "Debian" makes it difficult getting an usable system after the updates.

Also aldube gave it another approach which probably works better.

Is doing tests with "MEPIS" (kernel 2.6.22) on newer hardware at the moment.
OK - it lacks the "Xandros" touch. But the stable "Debin Etch" base makes the
distribution interesting.
