Dump the NEC drive get a new one. NEC is one those brands that are evil in my book. I have had nothing but trouble with NEC and Buslink products, even in windows they don't always work right.

I use sony drives myself in towers. I have never added a drive to a notebook, but I am sure sony makes them for notebooks too. I have also tried pioneer and toshiba they all work fine. Check out newegg.com or even the asus site for recommendations. Drives are fairly inexpensive if you buy OEM, this means no cable or instructions, but you save 10-15 dollars. So, hope I helped. The easy way is to buy an external usb drive. I dont know much about the Asus eee, but it doesn't look like it has an interanl one, right?

I am guessing this is a new drive, and this suggestion may sound bizzare but try a lens cleaning disc. Also a correction to my suggestion about the sony drives. Sony apparently has teamed up with NEC. So I can't say for certain if a sony drive will be any better. Good luck.

spawn.....running a cleaning disc was the first thing i did when i noticed there were problems......i'd suspected that i would need to buy a new drive......i'm just going to stash the drive away until i get a new laptop or a friend needs it

Really!?? Have had no problem at all with my NEC 3550A cd/dvd drive. In Fact I purposely bought an NEC Drive because others have raved about it's reliability, performance and accuracy etc. Both XP and Xandros have no problem using it on my system. I'm surprised by your comment.
