Not really true. "Windows 2000/XP Professional/Vista" supports dualcore/CPU.
But "Windows 95/98/ME/XP Home" and most applications doesnt. |
XP home support dual and quad core cpus, in fact, it supports multiple cores, as long as all the cores are connected to the same socket on the motherboard. |

This is mainly a license thing. What MS refer to here is Dual-Processor setup. Meaning a two processor sockets on one motherboard kind of deal. Dual-core with one socket however, works fine

People still use 95/98/ME? Unbelievable...
I'm sue XP home can run on a Dual Core setup. Maybe not as well as XP Pro.

I have win98 installed on this computer, but use it very rarely. I also have XP, which I had to install for a software development project I worked on. That's the only time I've used XP, and if I have need to run windoze, I'd be more likely to use 98 than XP. (OK, I guess you could say I've also used XP when I had to clean all the viruses and such off friend's computers.) And I have a computer here that runs win3.1, which I still use now and then when I need a file that I only have stored on 5.25 inch floppies - it's the only computer I have with both 3.5 and 5.25 inch floppies. I also have here an 8088 computer that runs only DOS, which keep telling myself I am going to put on the internet some day, just to see if it can be done.

Ha-Ha "GUIS and Commanders" .
Why not? Some people gets smarter when getting older. Thats why they dont waste
money on new computers with latest OS from "Microsoft", to write a few documents,
surf and pay bills on internet, send mail and chat.
Unfornately some of these users needs faster CPU:s and more RAM getting equal
speed from an modern "Linux" distribution than that of "Windows 95/98/ME".
You know, old T-Ford:s are still usable... _________________ Linux User #432929

Yes, it can be done. Do a google search for Arachnee. Of course, you also have to install a tcp/ip stack. |

I know you still like MS, but it was XP's activation spyware that convinced me to move to Linux. So Yeah, I still have 98se installed on a couple of machines here. Only use it when I have no other choice, which isn't often.
A couple of weeks ago, I was forced to acquire a copy of XP when I bought a new laptop. It seems to run better than 98se, but it's on a 2 Ghz machine with 2GB of RAM , not a PII366 with 128MB. All the "so called" security pop up warnings, & other pop up "notices" (some from Dell, to be fair) are extremely annoying. I will put some version of Linux on it soon , & not look back. I just don't trust that any version of windows is doing *only* what I want it to do....

Talk about being paranoid....
On a side note everytime I used XP I don't have any pop-ups. I don't have them now with Vista. Oh and guess what? My third party firewall hasn't detected Vista calling home yet...

I was even willing to put-up with so-called product activation when I upgraded to Xp from 98'. Even though I still thought that it was an invasion of my privacy I thought Xp was a superior product and had more pluses than minuses. So I thought it was worth it. And in general Xp is more stable etc.
But the "straw that broke the camel's back" was the introduction of palladium and the new DRM implemented in Vista. Till this day I'm still outraged by it!!
My reaction: "How dare you"!!!! Not on MY computer you don't. You just blew it pal! Whatever it takes I won't have this garbage on my machine. What continues to surprise me in all honesty is all the M$ appologists. Refusing to see what they don't want to see. Even though the information is public knowledge and released by M$ themselves. Maybe if they stood up and refused to buy an OS that abuses their right to privacy M$ would be forced to give us all a better product. But noo. "Dude you just need a new computer, faster processor etc." God how can people be sooo stupid. Gee wiz it's everyone's fault but Microsofts right?? Say anything just don't blame M$. I bet the next M$ OS will be even more invasive because people refuse to hold them accountable and demand better. _________________ Linux is a learning experience. I have alot to learn. |

Kona, are you *sure* you don't have a pirated copy of windows?

All I can tell you is that on this brand new machine running xp I'm getting lot's of them telling me I'm stupid to try to do what I told the machine to do. They all come with boxes to check to "never display this message again" so I assume you saw them all & checked the box & *now* you don't get pop ups....
You can call me paranoid all you want. I call it "safe computing" & there is no place for any ms software under that heading, IMHO.
You can believe what you wish to believe. I will error on the safe side of the road, & suffer no harm by doing so.
