Xandros 4 OCE is a DVD. Is it possible to break apart this iso so
it fits on several CDs instead (with the CDs recognizing each others)?
Or reduce the DVD iso so it fits on a CD (you can always install stuffs
via XN after you get the basic install done)?

The short answer is yes, but I don't know all the details. You can copy the iso file to your hard drive, mount it, edit it, then create a new iso with the mkisofs command. I read about the process a while ago when I first learned that OCE4 was going to be DVD-only. Don't think I know enough about it to actually do it myself, but it can be done.

Thanks for the download geekydude. I seeded the torrent overnight and uploaded almost 2 GB.
AFA making CD images out of the DVD image , I looked at the contents.
Two directories of packages could be moved to the 2nd CD to make everything fit on 2 CD images.:
/dists/xandros4.0/contrib/
/dists/xandros4.0//non-free/
But you need to do some modification to the installer config that is looking for a specific iso image.
(IMO) This is something that Xandros should do. You do not want to be the person releasing something that may have bugs and reflects badly on Xandros. |

It's quite possible this is one reason they haven't made it available again...? _________________ geekydude

Personally, I guessing it would be easier to cut things out (shrink size
to fit on a CD) then to split DVD into several CDs. For instance, if the
CD is for English users only, all the add-on for different languages can
be knocked out. Also, alot of trivial stuffs can be knocked. E.g., in Xandros
OCE 3.0.1 launch -> applic. -> access., I have never used anything but
text editor and print jobs. Also in -> system and -> utilities, there are
alot of stuffs, I never used. I'm sure others have opinion on what can be
knocked out. Whatever knocked out can easily be restored via XN.
Just my 2 cents.

| Many distros such as Ubuntu and Knoppix use Squashfs. To fit more on a CD. |

| For what it's worth, I'd be interested in seeing that happen. The humble old machine I am using to learn linux isn't going to get a new dvd drive. |

If anyone is still interested ...
Using isoMaster one may remove the optionals: OpenOffice, OpenOffice documents (40mb), CodeWeaver, Adobe, RealPlayer, ThunderBird, Scype, Mo-Zilla (but not FireFox plugins), Chinese font ....
and right away you are below 700mb
I am writing this post on XandrOs 4.1 which I installed using the modified iso on a CD
(if i really wanted to tinker i would replace the disgusting installation splash images with images from XandrOs 3.0.2) |

Just in case anybody's interested, I tried installing the isomaster DEB, but there are many unmet dependencies. I tried compiling it from source, and it compiled and installed, but it crashes as soon as you try to open an iso. So, I'm afraid you'll have to edit your Xandros DVD iso on some other distro!

Nothing to it, just use isoMaster
http://littlesvr.ca/isomaster/
open xandros4.iso; remove the optionals (OpenOffice alone is more than 100mb); and save the modified, less then 700mb iso; burn it; and when you are installing it remember to uncheck those packages that are not there.
It installed just fine; I would have un-checked most of the optionals anyway |

Downloaded XandrOs 2.0.1, size 535.193.443
When I try to open it I get this error
| Code: | error [xandros-201-ocd-installation.zip]: missing 2035545 bytes in zipfile (attempting to process anyway)
error [xandros-201-ocd-installation.zip]: start of central directory not found; zipfile corrupt.
(please check that you have transferred or created the zipfile in the appropriate BINARY mode and that you have compiled UnZip properly) |
