I downloaded the tar.gz driver for this printer from the Canon site, extracted, and used XN to install cnijfilter-common-2.60-1.i386.rpm and cnijfilter-ip4200-2.60-1.i386.rpm.

The Xandros Control Center identifies the Canon ip4200 as a new USB printer in its printer wizard, and I specified as PPD /usr/share/cups/model/canonip4200.ppd. Selecting "Print Test Page" opens the Printer control window with "Canon ip4200_1 -- Print Jobs" as its title, and a print job "Test page" appears for a few seconds, but then it disappears with no output from the printer. (BTW, on my setup "Canon ip4200" without the _1 uses the bjc8200 driver, which gives grayscale output perfectly but colors printed from applications are very washed out.)

Any other Xandros folks use this printer? It's a nice one; I had to use it a lot last summer, for a project that involved some color output, and had to run it on a Windows machine.

It is supported here .. http://www.turboprint.de/english.html
Also do you have Gutenprint Suite installed?
Look at the foomatic-db-gutenprint package installed
Perhaps the Gutenprint driver will work?

According to the OpenPrinting page on that printer:

http://www.openprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Canon-PIXMA_iP4200

it works Perfectly in Linux - with the Canon supplied drivers, which are not yet in the foomatic database. So, it seems likely that Xandros doesn't really have a suitable driver for it. You might give the drivers from Canon a try:

Yes, Jim, that "perfectly" is what's so frustrating! This driver is the one I DL'd, extracted, etc. in my original post.

I'm going to work on sqlpython's ideas shortly.

A few minutes later: Turboprint works, but costs $30 to get rid of their logo on each page. There must be a free way. Gutenprint was NOT installed; it now is, but their site does not list the ip4200 as supported. I'm still wondering why, when the printer setup that uses the Canon ppd file is selected (Canon_ip4200_1) and I ask it to "Print Test Page," my print-jobs window appears, briefly shows "No Printer - Print Jobs" then "Canon_ip4200_1 - Print Jobs" but no print job is shown, and of course nothing comes out of the printer.

Another discovery: When I printed from the Gimp (using the BJC8200 driver) it had been set at 300x300dpi. That output looks a lot better at 1200x1200! But the sizes are wrong... something else to fool around with, I guess.

Thanks to both of you for your advice. I'll get it going eventually.

What aobut the foomatic-db-gutenprint package on XN......
I was under the impression that it married foomatic drivers to the gutenprint or had a database list of drivers...

Take a look...

You're right; the PPDs are in /usr/share/foomatic/db/source/ppd. But there is no Canon folder. The only Canon file is under "printer," and it's Canon-ip4000.xml. This printer list looks identical to the one that's on the foomatic site.

I wonder what I need for the Canon drivers, besides the two files listed in the original post above.

I am using the iP4200 with the iP4000 driver that is in Gutenprint. It works very good. Iam not sure what the difference is between the 4000 and 4200 drivers, but it must be fairly minor.
