I use Xandros 3.x on my desktop but on my laptop, Ubuntu doesn't work so well for me. I need to read and write ntfs partitions so I purchased Xandros 4.x

I currently have a dual boot system on a Dell Latitude D400 Laptop with Windows XP on one partition and Ubuntu on the other. When I installed Ubuntu on a ext partition, it created a 1.29 GB extended partition and a 1.29 linux-swap partition.

The question is, when I install Xandros 4.x on this drive, will it use both of the small 1.29 GB partitions or should I delete these? Oh, I guess I can just install over Ubuntu and be safe?

Thanks,
Joe

Hi Joesplace. how many partitions, both primary and extended
and which filestems do you have?

When installing "Xandros", selecting "Custom install" you can use
the inbuilt partition tool to manage the harddisk.

SOME WELLWORKING SOLUTIONS
With one partition that both "Windows" and "Linux" can fully use:
Windows "2000/XP" (primary) NTFS
Shared "Windows/Linux"(primary) FAT32 (max 32.5GB with Windows Administration tools)
Linux "root & home" (primary) EXT3
Linux "swap" (primary) SWAP

Or when "Linux" has become the more important OS:
Windows "2000/XP" (primary) NTFS
Linux "root" (primary) EXT3
Linux "home" (primary) EXT3
Linux "swap" (primary) SWAP

Thanks for the reply Doctore - I have an 80 GB hard drive and am phasing out Windows XP. Currently Windows has 24 GB and Ubuntu has 50 GB on an ext partition with two small (3 GB) partitions for the root and swap file.

Xandros is my most important OS and as soon as I migrate data I will say goodbye to Windows. It's taken three years to get this far! When I load Xandros to replace Ubuntu, what size do you recommend the following (65 GB total space left) OR will it auto size for me?

Windows "2000/XP" (primary) NTFS = 15 GB
Linux "root" (primary) EXT3 = ? GB
Linux "home" (primary) EXT3 = ? GB
Linux "swap" (primary) SWAP = ? GB

xandros does a great job of reding and writing to NTFS partitions BUT...........

So does Ubuntu's new Feisty 7.04 edition
It is activated in the menu system on the desktop..very easy ..if you choose to use Ubuntu

If you decide on Xandros you will also be very satisfied.

Of course, autosize works, but if you installs many applications and "root" partition gets full,
then you have to start all over. So i would recommend an "custom" install. Something as:
Linux "root" (primary) EXT3 = 10-20GB
Linux "home" (primary) EXT3 = 45-55 GB
Linux "swap" (primary) SWAP = 2xsize of RAM (old rule)

An normal "Linux" install tends to use about 3-6GB "root" space and having enough with room
in spare is sometimes an good idea. My own "root" is oversized and I have about 20GB left on
that one, just in case...
