Anyone using an HP printer or all-in-one with Xandros?

I installed Debian 4.0 in a separate partition on my Linux box and loved the way that the HPLIP installer for HP printers found my PSC3210a and installed it without a bump -- completely unlike the way I had to set up using the HP driver packaged with Xandros 4.0 Professional and which produces unsatisfactory results.

So, I got the bright idea that I should install the same HPLIP package in my everyday work install of Xandros after uninstalling the HP driver per HPs instructions.

Bad, newbie ... bad, bad, newbie ...

I went to the HP installer page at Sourceforge and attempted to follow their instructions for a manual install on Xandros.

At the point where I am to install dependencies, the system chokes on libsnp5-dev which apt can't find.

The message says:

> Package libsnp5-dev is not available but is referred to by another
> package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been
> obsoleted, or is only available from another source.

So I searched and found it at security.debian.org/debian.security but when I downloaded and installed, I was informed that the package is broken and that there may be other dependencies.

I checked for the other dependencies and am told that they're all there and working.

I can't seem to find the right way to configure the address so the apt-source list can check and find it, either.

I have also tried the install with the same version that is packaged in the Debian 4 stable .iso (about 1.64 when the latest release on Sourceforge is 2.7.6) but produced the same result.

What do I do now?

Okay, I did more digging and found an install package on Xandros Networks. I have installed the three relevent packages and rebooted.

There are a number of folders that files have been distributed into and I have found the the file that should underlie the GUI I expected to find after reboot. Meaning I have to do something more to turn this into a GUI?

Just about the time I get used to being merely stupid, something comes along that makes me feel like an idiot ...

I don't need hplip at the moment, so I can't help you. But it looks like you're figuring things out on your own. Keep us informed; you may wind up being the expert that tells the rest of us how to do it!

What do you mean by GUI?

Are you looking for a toolbox? If so, either open a console or alt-F2 and enter 'hp-toolbox'. If hplip is installed you should get a nice gui toolbox to control your all-in-one.

Hope this is of help.

Thanks for the advice. It's quite useful. Unfortunately, it leads to a process that doesn't work in Xandros as well as it does in other Debian or KDE desktop versions.

What is available via XN is a second class kludge that doesn't work. The HP Toolbox cannot find the printer -- the Printer Wizard (sic) has to do that. After we fill out all of the network data. Then we have to find out whether the information we gave to the Wizard works with Toolbox. In Debian 4.0, this is seamless and both sides of the process communicate with each other seamlessly.

Then again, the available XN version is 0.92 and the current install base is at 2.7.6 .... perhaps a bit of an update by Xandros would be in order ...

Debian 4.0 is free and I had HP Toolbox finding my printer on my WIN-style LAN and printing out a test page with a couple of mouseclicks and no advance network setup.

Someone in the Corel Linux forum has been able to install the latest version of the driver and has told me how he did it. I am going to uninstall the XN version and follow his instructions to see if I can duplicate the result. then I'll have to put my newly-learned skills in making menu entries to good use.

Thanks for the suggestions. They're helping make progress, even if it's just advancing the knowledge of a newbie.

I would advise you to uninstall the hplip driver that is from XN and install the one supplied by HP. I did that and after enabling the unsupported repository, it installed without a hitch. I now have HPLIP software version 1.7.3 installed and version 9.0 of the device manager software, which see's my printer right away. I must say that I found out about 'hp-toolbox' over on the PCLOS forum. I didn't even know that it was available.

Hope this helps some,

It helps more than just a little. You have confirmed that I have been thinking through things along the right track. v.1.7.3 is about the same as the version installed in the stable .iso of Debian, so I would expect similar performance.

When you say "supplied by HP" I assume you mean the HPLIP site at http://hplip.sourceforge.net/ Correct?

Have you tried playing with a later version or do they require updates to the kernel that break Xandros? Just thinking out loud ... but I don't need any bleeding edge performance at least until I am more comfortable with what I am doing. Besides, I still have to find out how to install my choice of Japanese input engine (scim-anthy) to replace the lousy one XN installs so I have lots of opportunity to break things over the coming weekend.

Now that I've re-read what I just wrote, it occurs to me that this might be a good place to pause and learn how to image this partition ....

Thanks again.

Yes I believe that is where I got it. An no I haven't played with any other versions.

Well, I went to Sourceforge and downloaded hplip-1.7.4a.run and it installed itself with just a few complaints. The test print seems to want to default to letter despite the fact that Control Center has been told that we're all metric here and use A4 size. Other than that, the test scan seems to be okay and making a copy from the desktop instead of the machine's front panel also worked seamlessly.

Thanks for the encouragement. If I get to feeling frisky, I may try to upgrade to the latest version, but I'm just going to rest on my laurels for a few minutes.

I have just purchased an HP 5610xi and I'm trying to get it working under XN 2.0. I went through the nightmare of trying to compile from source code and even though it all compiled (after much pain) it doesn't work!

Could you give me a push in the right direction?

How do I install a .run file?

Thanks,

mgb

I to cannot install a .run file. I've been trying to install hplip-2.7.10.run

according to sourceforge I'm suppose to:

Open a terminal or command line window. Then run:

sh hplip-2.7.10.run

Well I'm sitting in the directory where the file is and when I run the command I get the following:

/home/tchodgd# sh hplip-2.7.10.run
hplip-2.7.10.run: line 1: !DOCTYPE: No such file or directory
hplip-2.7.10.run: line 2: syntax error near unexpected token `newline'
hplip-2.7.10.run: line 2: ` "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">'
