Not a peep anywhere from Xandros 4 HP on this new Dell laptop.

Here's a box that I see occasionally:

*****************
Informational -- artsmessage
Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device: default can't be opened for playback (No such device)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.
*******************

When I open the Sound Mixer, it's largely just a gray box; "Current mixer:" with an empty box that has (an empty set of) dropdown options. Help says it's Kmix (Sound Mixer 2.6 (using KDE 3.4.2)).

Running alsaconf as root provides the info that I'm using "hda-intel ATI Technologies Inc SB600 Azalia" ["ATI ... Azalia" is also the lspci output shown as "audio device"] but (after a promising "sound driver is configured" message) I receive this:

****************************
Running update-modules
Loading driver...
FATAL: Error inserting snd_hda_intel (/lib/modules/2.6.18-dcc-smp/extra/snd-hda-intel.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
FATAL: Error running install command for snd_hda_intel
Setting default volumes...
amixer: Mixer attach default error: No such device
-------------------------
Now ALSA is ready to use.
For adjustment of volumes, use your favorite mixer.
Have a lot of fun!
*******************************

Appreciate the best wishes, guys --- reminds me of my old SuSE days --- but it IS NOT FUN! I've tried to follow some of the advice elsewhere in this forum, though I have yet to reinstall X4 (too many programs have been added since then to make that attractive). Restore Xandros didn't help.

Here's the /etc/devices/devices.inf audio portion:

[audio.0000_00_14_2]
class = 0x040300
classname = Audio device
desc = SB600 Azalia
kerneldrivers = snd-hda-intel
manu = ATI Technologies Inc
pci = 0x1002, 0x4383, 0x1028, 0x01f5
subdesc = 01f5
submanu = Dell
******************************

This new Dell is pretty frustrating: no modem, and no sound. (They may be related; I see the "informational artsmessage" when I try to connect using the free Linuxant modem driver.) Sorry to say this, but I'm glad I resisted my temptation to wipe XP off, and chose dual-boot instead. If I want to hear anything, or connect via phone modem, I have to boot into XP.

Any help from the group, please?

Just for the record, I've given up on this machine's Xandros 4 installation. The ATI SB600 Azalia sound card is not on the HCL and I haven't been able to install its driver. I think the modem also depends on this sound card's functioning.

I'll continue to use the laptop in Windows XP, and to try the Xandros OS occasionally (it's dual booting) but the frustration is too much. Xandros works great on my desktop, and on my older Sony Vaio laptop.

John,
I was not completely sure from your initial post whether your laptop was running Linux and had sound working before you installed Xandros 4. If not, here are some things you could try:
1) Check if acpi is interfering with your sound
2) Upgrade the alsa sound driver

Also, from your post I see this message:
FATAL: Error inserting snd_hda_intel (/lib/modules/2.6.18-dcc-smp/extra/snd-hda-intel.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

This could be due to problems with your /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-snd-hda-intel file.

See my thread on Toshiba Satellite P100/105 sound issues, and see if anything may help.

Thanks for responding, CN. No, there's never been another Linux distro on this new laptop. And I may misremember when I said I thought I once heard audio from X4. I haven't totally given up on its X4 installation but that ATI SB600 Azalia sound card seems to be the problem.

In addition to your very careful and detailed procedure for the Toshiba, I came across this via Google this morning. It specifically is for the Inspiron 1501, but they're using CentOS or Gentoo rather than Xandros. (I've never seen a "yum install" command!)

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?t=518524

I'll keep plugging away, and have the Installation CD handy when my .DCOPserver acts up again...

The problem was that hsfmodem replaced two necessary files. Deleting it (I never got it to work anyway) restored my laptop sound. See this, in "Install Xandros":

I bought a refurbished 1521 from Dell and it came with Vista. Vista, however, wouldn't talk to my other networked computers running Win200 and Linux. Dell support was no help and basically said I was up the creek. I have loaded Xandros 4 and have full networking. I got the wireless connection working by using ndiswrapper and the new .inf and .sys files from Broadcom. Now the only thing left is the no sound problem. This has the SB600 Azalia sound chip and I have tried all sorts of things from reading about this on the forums. My last attempt involved recompiling the latest ALSA file and now I am getting the error when it tries to load the snd-hda-intel module. In the dmesg output, it says that "disable_msi=1" is an unknown parameter. The file /etc/module.d/alsa-snd-hda-intel has just one line that reads "options snd-hda-intel disable_msi=1" Has anybody gotten the sound to work on one of these laptops? Where do I go from here? I can live without sound but it sure would be nice to get it going. Thanks.

What's the sound card? Might as well list all the hardware. Often it's an interference from some other hardware.

Sorry, I should have included that info in my post.

In the BIOS setup screen the audio is listed as a Sigmatel 9205.
The Modem is a Conexant HDA D330 MDC.

lspci lists the Audio as ATI Technologies Inc. SB600 Azalia.

In Control Center under System:Sound it lists a sound driver with ALSA emulation code. The installed driver is listed as Type 10: ALSA emulation.
Under Card config, it says --- no soundcards ---.
Under Audio Devices is says: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG.

I am fairly much a newbie in Linux and am quite confused by all this.
Thanks,

Interesting link. I had first tried the new Freespire 2.03 release and the video wouldn't work. Then I tried Kubuntu 7.04 and got the same result, no go. Kubuntu 6.10 would run and the video came up fine, but Kubuntu is much harder to use anyway. That's when I tried Xandros and it came up fine without all those video hassles that were described in the link above. However, as I tried his solution to the audio, I got to the point of dpkg-reconfigure alsa-source, and the hda-intel was nowhere to be found. At first it couldn't find the alsa-source so I got it from Xandros Networks. Could it be that the source from XN is not up to date enough to include hda-intel?

Just for fun, I connected my Edirol UA-1EX USB audio interface. I have tried this on other computers with various flavors of Linux and have never been able to get it to work. I did a "modprobe snd-usb-audio" and it came right up! It only works correctly at 16bit/44.1Ks as I remember reading someplace else. I still would like to get the normal audio working.
Thanks

Good Steve...

Your machine from all accounts appears to be a tough LINUX install.
Perhaps the next Kernel version or next OSSound version from 4Front Technologies..

I hate to say this but I swiched to Kubuntu 7.04 and followed the steps from the above link to get me going. Kubuntu 7.04 is running the 2.6.20 kernel. I still couln't get sound until I followed these instructions https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto. I compiled the latest alsa version from source and the last step that made it finally work was setting the model to dell-m44 in the options line in alsa-base. Now that I know how to make it work, maybe I'll come back to Xandros and see if I can get it to work there.

Sometimes one Distro will have a more compatible Database for your Hardware then an other Distro. I have had to search around regarding some of my Laptop installs for the best match before. I was trying to install SuSE 9.x on my Dell Inspiron 5100 ( w/o complete satisfaction) when I tried Xandros and they liked each other. With so many LiveCDs these days it is better sometimes to see what runs out of the box best first... If my current Distro can be tweaked well then yes but sometimes it is a headache.
