I,m taking a bold plunge here. I downloaded and installed xandros server trial version.
I have 2 windows boxes, and one xandros desktop.
I can print off the xandros desktop well enough but i get an access denied on the windows boxes.
The printers are configured properly and are seen on each machine.
I've allowed all users on the network full control. next to calling xandros, im at a loss here. Can someone please help?
my firewall is off too! |

OK, I don't quite grasp the configuration. The printers are connected to which machines?
I almost looks like the Windows machines cannot print to the printer on the Xandros box, is that correct?
Have you set the printer on the Xandros box to be a shared printer? This is done in the Control Center | Peripherals | Printers. There you will have a list of printers that your Xandros box can use. You need to single click the printer connected to the Xandros box to select it, then click the 'properties' button on the bottom of the control center window. That will open up a tabbed dialog box, one of the tabs being "Windows sharing." From there you can enable the printer so that it can be seen and used by the Windows boxes on the network.
Hope that helps.

Yes the printer is set to share
What I have is a xandros server, with the xandros server trial software installed,
I have the printer attached to this server,
I have the firewall shut off
I have everybody in the whole wide world (at least it seems) full permission to use this printer
I installed windows drivers in the xandros server box
okay...when i set up the first windows box to use the printer, i sent a test page and it worked
Then I went to my other xandros desktop box to set up the printer there.
when i sent for a test page, it asked for a user and password. I used the username 'administrator' and password, which is the same as the xandros management console username and password. Then it worked!
Then i went to my second windows box and set up the printer on the xandros server there and everything set up right but instead of sending a test page, i got a message that access was denied to the xandros server machine. huh?? so then i went back to my other windows box and yup, 'access denied' i tried the xandros desktop...no problem
so i read the whole server administration manual dealing with printing on the xandros server and there seems to be nothing else to do.
now im here |

OK, I only have one machine with a local printer on it, and it is running Xandros 3.
Control Center | Peripherals | Printers
select the printer in question
click "properties" and go to the "Windows Sharing" tab
The box "Share this item and its coontents" should be checked
At the bottom of that tab, there should be a button "Permissions"
Click that button, which will open another dialog box. Make sure that access is set to "anonymous"
See if that works. If not, then you may want to try tech support. They will respond even during the trial period for an unpurchased product.

I just installed the trial version after being disappointed with the latest Ubuntu release. In my home we have 1 Mac and two Windows machines.
The windows machines can reach the shares creates on the Xandros machine, including the printer.
The Xandros machine cannot reach any of the Windows shares on the Windows machines.
The two Windows machines never had any issues sharing between themselves.
I am curious to find out where the problem lies. |

In Linux, you have to mount network shares to the Linux filesystem if the 'average' Linux application is going to be able to use them.
Are you able to browse the Windows machines using the Xandros File Manager under the "Windows Network" entry in the left pane of XFM? XFM does an automount in order to be able to do this.
You may also want to start another thread on this. It will be more visible to the rest of the folks here. My knowledge in this area is limited.

| Thanks Frank. I see the computer names in XFM but I get a message saying that I will not be able to see or access them. |

I've only seen that error a couple of times, and it has been when the IP address of the remote machines changed, or if they were disconnected from the network. In my case, rebooting all the machines reset things. However, this is not a very good solution, and may not even work if your problem stems from something else.
I am not a networking expert, which is why I suggest you start a new thread with regard to this problem. I saw your message as I tagged this thread in order to follow it. However, it does not appear as a new thread on the board, as someone else started it. If you start a new thread, more people are going to see it, and you will be more likely to get the help you need.
