| Quote: | | I'm not exactly sure, I had to make an emergency room run with my g/f and ran out without logging out. My kids then installed mplayer and other media type stuff. |
| Quote: | ok more is coming to light now. My oldest son was trying to get the latest nvidia drivers installed so he could enable xgl/compiz etc.
He ran apt-get dist-upgrade also.

From that info & the errors you are getting, sounds like they installed stuff from unsupported sources. If so sounds like they've trashed a number of Xandros-tweaked files & recovery isn't usually easy.
Read up on how to pin your system to reverse the damage in the tips or tricks section if you don't want to reinstall, but I'd be reaching for the install CD (after backing up anything important) if I were in your shoes.
This is why the root password should be kept to the administrator of the machine

ITSa341. Havent needed pinning myself. But if you are using
"Debian" repositories its likely that "stable" now refers to "Etch".
"Sarge" is now referred as "old stable" (on which Xandros is built).
Check this at http://www.debian.org.
Pinning gives "automatic" source selection which is an good thing.
With "Synaptic" you can visually and manually choose from which source
you installs selected application/dependies. When you are cautios,
the chances are small to trash your system using "S". (some on this
forum dont agree, but who cares, as long as its practical to use).

I contacted Tech support as recommended. I recieved a form letter explaining how to use the install cd to run restore. I tried this and it seems to have made no differences.
I also found that although my son had downloaded the latest nvidia drivers he had not yet tried to install them. He was trying to carefully follow the direction in a post he found and was waiting for me to get home from the hospital to help.javascript:emoticon(' ')
He did run the dist-upgrade as he thought it was a safe way to make sure the system was fully up to date. |

Dist upgrade& update should never be run with any sources other than Xandros supported. I don't trust pinning, personally, but it should never be trusted when doing those.
If you read the pinning topic in tips & tricks, it tells you how to adjust your pins to perhaps reverse what was done. I don't use pinning, so I don't recall the details.
