I might add that I think it is an excellent idea to have a preferences file. I have one that is taken from the previous page from this thread (without comments!).
I have installed a lot of packages and Xandros is still well intact. A number of times an install has not proceeded (usually for me saying "broken packages") which I assume is the prefs file not allowing it to happen.

Tony and all others good posts.
It will stop me from shooting my self in the foot. Maybe that is why I take a full image back of Xandros on my system left over from Windows World.

I've been using Xandros for quite some time now, and all this was of great interest to me.
I simply added mirror sites of debian to etc/apt/sources.list and much of what I needed went
in long before any of the above threads gave all this advice.
It's easier still to simply add programs from other cd roms. A slight adjustment of etc/fstab was necessary for me in /dev/cdrom to make it work and I simply redid it the way my /etc/fstab was done in my Debian 3.0. The Xandros people are unique, and when I change a script I keep in mind that such a finely woven piece of art work has to be studied carefully as to not break the overall configurations.
Xandros is full of pleasant surprises as a consequence of their configs, and even df -h doesn't
show the same readings as my Debian 3.0 box.
By the way, I enjoyed this thread tremendously and I really like this forum overall... |

Thank you Delphi123. I had nerver heard of pinning until I opened this thread, and am glad to know I'm not the only one feeling like there aught to be a more clear explanation somewhare.
Now, about that DVD comment. I'll be glad to find and read your article on DVD readers, but can you point me in the right direction to look for a DVD writer driver. I have iOMEGA Super DVD writrers, and found one possible driver, but it was in source code only. I downloaded what should have been a linux driver from the iOMEGA website, but it didn't work. _________________ Mud level gnubie |

I´m wondering if anyone ever tried converting Xandros 2 over to Debian after the Xandros 2 got a little stale after a while?
I imagine the XN and Konkerer would no longer work for starters; however, I wonder if it would be a fully functional debian system updateable with regular debian updates?
I like to experiment on my secondary system hehehe; _________________ Linux simply works for me...

I have and sure I got a functional Debian. All Xandros stuff was gone and my desktop did not look as good as it used to. But it worked. Be aware that the result may vary from case to case. You may not be as lucky as I was and may very well end up with a non bootable OS. |

Wow, why can't one of you geek types make us a script that lets us configure Debian Stable sources, unstable sources, and the like as well as set up this pinning thing for us rather then ALL this... _________________ =======>> Linux Rocks <<=========== |

| That was the result of my attempt. So I had to delete /etc/apt/preferences again. |

Hi,
Question; does the 'pinning' still count for Xandros 4.0 SP1?
Or is that taken care of elsewhere...?
Quite important I think...
Grtz!

Yes, sort of; if Xandros 4 doesn't have the required dependencies for the Debian application, then the application will refuse to install giving the "broken dependencies error".
The better alternative to pinning is to just to rebuild the Debian application on Xandros using the apt-get -b source command.
Linux Standard Base (LSB) might fix many dependency problems in Xandros 5, but I believe it when I see it. _________________ Linux simply works for me...
