So a couple things:
- logged into the OS (gui) as root
- opened console ran osstest. Same results as before. It appears to run and everything is OK. No sound. Tried using "test sound" in the control center, no sound. Checked user group privileges and the user is part of the audio group.
One thing I didnt notice before in the hardware detection. It does list MCP51 audio under Audio section but has Driver: <empty> and No driver installed.
So seems to be same as before... everything kind of looks like it should work but doesnt.
One thing I'm thinking of trying - pretty much as last resort: wiping the Xandros install, re-installing. See if sound works immediately otherwise retry the OSS install stuff on a relatively clean install. That's about the last I can think of |

That would be a logical path.
Sometimes after a lot of changes configs can get mucked up.
We have to recognize that even over at OSS the bleeding edge is just recognizing your HD nvidia sound chip. _________________

You may need to shop for a new lawnmower, sql.
I did the reinstall. Of note: I overwrote the existing install and the install indicated it would overwrite base install but save some "personal data" in backup dirs. When I first logged into the GUI, it already had my prev userid although there were many things not saved. So, not 100% sure if that install was as good as actually formatting the linux partition and reinstalling.
After reading the OSS docs a bit, I noticed the utils. I got the gui mixer going and pressed all the buttons to see if something was muted, etc. The lights were dancing away trying to play something.
Here is output from OSSINFO (verbose)

Pretty much out of ideas... even unplugged my line out speakers to try laptop speakers, hit the laptop mute, volume, etc..
Also of note, the currently selected audio device is OSS. ALSA still produces an error which is previously documented here. |

Me too.
Seems Xandros will have to wait until it can use the OSS 5.0 to light up your particular card.
I don't think you missed anything. Unless someone sees another possiblity..Sorry
On to Ubuntu 6.xx _________________

Well, I tried Ubuntu 6.10, however I did not try the OSS drivers with it... hmmm... guess I have nothing to lose. Sad though, cuz Ubuntu does not easily detect and hang on to my bluetooth kbd/mouse, while xandros found it even at the install screen. Very nice. |

| Thanks for everyone's help on this issue by the way. I may also try Xandros support. Heck, I'd buy xandros if the sound thing could be straightened out. |

I bought a gateway laptop in feb. model mt-3418, it has the same sound chip as yours. My laptop came with vista home premium installed and the sound works fine.
I don't like vista so partitioned the drive and installed xandros, same problem as you have, no sound.
I then tried suse 10.2 and the newest mepis 6.5, no sound in any linux distro i tried. Have tried every thing suggested in this thread and still no sound. If you find the answer please post it!
ps xandros without sound is still far superior to vista, even with sound in vista!

Greetz!
I have run across this problem repeatedly and in very odd circumstances. Example, my ESi Juli@ ICE1724 (awesome recording and music card!) worked on first boot of Xandros v3 on the same machine that I got the "no default device" message in Slackware. Since then (I've had higher prioroities than just sound cards) I installed Xandros 4, which I like quite a lot and may actually go back to buying retail releases from Xandros, however one oddball glitch is Xandros 4 now fails to load Alsa with the same damned message.
Now I have not completed this as I've mentioned I've had lots of fires to put out and others to build, but I began seeking a fix first by visiting the Alsa site (www.alsa-project.org) where in "Sound Card List" one can get brand and model specific help including the infamous .asoundrc file with examples. However THE BEST HELP is to be had on IRC on the Alsa channel. If you see several alsa related channels on "channel list" pick the one with the really large number of users online. In there they have a utility you can download from a their secure site. You run it and it saves a huge amount of data relating to all aspects of your alsa sound system. You upload it to their site, when asked by the pro moderators and within just a few minutes they can give you the most expert answers since these moderators are the developers of the Alsa project itself!
The only reason I haven't gotten mine fixed yet is because I was logged into the internet and IRC from a different box so I couldn't give them the nfo they needed. That box was down due to a broken video card in transit on RMA. It is now fixed as of today and I hope to go back to #Alsa from that machine and get this weird problem fixed. I suspect it is a conflict between something in 2.6.x kernel alsa support and external (to the kernel) stuff. Should be a fairly easy fix even though googling has shown it is a very common problem. Perhaps not many realize how good the support is at Alsa.
I'll write back soon with what I find.
