|
|
I am rapidly approaching the day when I will have a 250Gb HDD in my desktop for partitioning into 6 partitions to install several different versions of Linux. It's been a long time since I partitioned my drive with 3rd party software (having Xandros do it does not count for this discussion). I just got done reading the thread about the GAG bootloader manager. What I need to know now is: What partitioning software would you all recommend? I have 6 versions of Linux that I want to put on a 250Gb drive (that my wife will let me buy in the next couple of months) and they are: Sabayon, PCLinuxOS, Xandros, Fedora, openSuSE, and Ubuntu. I was also going to try out Linux XP, but it's 20 bucks for a licence and I also read some bad reviews on the Net. So, I decided since it was getting bad reviews and it's 20 bucks that I would just opt out (their EULA is very MS-ish, IMO).
My end goal here is to set this up as a demo box to loan to friends and co-workers to get them interested in switching from Windows to Linux. I'm also very excited about installing Sabayon and trying that out. So, I figured when I get the drive, that I'd break it up into 6 40Gb partitions and 1 10Gb partition (where I would load all my music and crap to make it accessible to all installs from one place). I also have a 30Gb drive that I can stick in the box to make another partition if I need it.
Since it's been so long, whatever recommendations anyone puts forth will be appreciated. I really can't recall if I need a separate program for partitioning the drive and another for the bootloader or not. If I recall correctly, I do. I'm looking for a partitioning program that is easy to use and, preferably, can be used from Linux since I don't want to load Windows back onto this box.
Thanks for all your help! |

I like QTParted which is available on the System Rescue CD and GParted with is available on the RIPLinux CD. Both are Partition Magic clones and work very nicely.
I hope this helps, _________________ Ed Richards

You could probably do the partitioning from the Xandros Install CD.
But, more likely you'll want something like the gparted LiveCD, or bootitng. Several times when the Xandros install CD was not able to resize up a winXP drive, bootitng has been able to.

Nearly any mainstream live cd will contain gtparted or qtparted etc. I use knoppix and mepis myself. These do a fine job, with no errors in my use. _________________ War doesn't determine who's right - only who's left. |
