I have two printers, connected to this computer via USB2, one is my brother 2070N laser B & W, and the other is a HP Photosmart C5180 colour printer. Both of these are Linux printers and both are installed and working correctly.

There should be a GUI front-end (hplip) for managing the HP Photosmart, however, as far as I can see it was not installed by default. A search in the repositories reveals hplip 0.9.2-2 and hpdata 0.9.2-2 but these seem to be out of date since the newest version of hplip is now at 1.6.12 according to this page: http://hplip.sourceforge.net/

This HP GUI management tool I talking about is very useful, and I have it installed on SuSE 10.2 (which is also installed on this computer) and I don't want to run without it on Xandros 4 if I can help it.

On this site: http://hplip.sourceforge.net/install/manual/distros/xandros.html there is a howto (together with a warning) for Xandros 4, but following the instructions given there, resulted in me having to reinstall Xandros 4, and I don't want to have to do that again (not today anyway).

Does somebody else on the forum have this HP utility running? Or can somebody on the forum indicate how I should proceed here? I am familiar with Linux but not Debian based platforms..

In case this is not resolved or someone else has this issue, please read the post below:

Hi sideloader!

The utility you are asking about is the HP-Toolbox.

It's a web based interface with a Gui front end in Windows, and just plain web interface in Linux.

It should already be installed.

You can access it by clicking on your launch button, and choose run command.
Type: hp-toolbox and click run.

If you want a nearly platform independent install of the latest HPLIP drivers, you can install it here:

http://hplip.sourceforge.net/downloads.html

Xandros is not listed, but Debian is, and Xandros is 100% Debian compliant, so it should work just fine (no guarantees, but should work).

Please post back and let me know if this helps! Razz

I used this approach to install HPLIP...in spite of a few "warning" messages, it installed fine, allowed me to install both of my HP printers (970Cse, OJ7140xi - Multi function). The Toolbox GUI set up Scanning, Faxing and Photo stuff as well.

Everything just worked -- until I rebooted. It seems it didn't insert itself into a boot level and now it won't start up...Alas! no printer...even though I have it listed in CUPS.

After all that, my question is...can somebody help me through editing the correct rc.d file, or whatever file I need to edit, so that HPLIP starts at boot time and I have my printers back?

Thanks!

Mark Grosskopf

Mark,

I'm glad you had what success you did have, however, I'm a printer expert, and I'm out of my league for the 'new problem'. Confused

I do think it's as easy as setting up the right configuration for it to automatically load at boot time though.

You might try emailing support or BoyLinux, or just wait to see if anyone else drops by with an answer.

Yeah, I know. While I can fumble my way through many of the config files, rc.d (I think) is not one I want to mess up.

The other part of the problem is determining which HPLIP file needs to be listed there...I have a menu item for the tool box (HP Toolbox), which is a python script, but it won't open up...mostly because an exe of some kind (maybe several, I don't know), that starts HPLIP. in sequence with CUPS and allows tool box to access the printer.

Good advice, though, I'll see if BoyLinux responds...if not, try to start a ticket.

Thanks again!

MG

You're welcome!

Please keep me posted, as I'd like to know the solution. Wink

Now, for a wish... I would think that if someone could put together an "editor" that located, tagged and allowed a user to review ALL such config files, in a kinda-sorta "Windows Registry" fashion, it would allow simpler editing and fixing such things...plus, much like Norton Windows utilities, run down and check the links and references, it would make it that much easier.

Just a wish mind you...I am not sophisticated enough of a coder to do that...

You should post it in the Xandros 5 suggestions in the member's forum. Wink

I think I've posted most of the threads there... Cool Laughing
