I've just installed Xandros Std Server on trial for evaluation. I'm trying to judge whether Xandros really can replace Win2003 as a primary domain controller for an XP network. And if it can, is it worth the cost over a $0 zero linux plus samba.

My first comment is disappointment that the onboard Help system is so shy of useful information. Why let people trial something if the setup and configuration methodology is to be semi-secret. I would have thought Xandros would want me to have a great experience from the first moment! Anyway, that said, here I am at the Forum. I guess this is where I have to learn. So to my first question:

Since I want the Xandros server to be the PDC of the Windows network I presume I need to activate the domain controller function. In the Management console I've found "Windows Networking" and in that I've found "Server Role". However the "Server Role" drop down box is greyed out. Why? What do I have to do first so I can configure the server role?

Could someone spare a moment to explain and or lead me through the critical path to configure the server as a PDC.
Many thanks

aryan,

Greyed out or not your first server is already a PDC. If you already have a AD domain it wasn't detected during installation. One might be xanserver.mydomain and a Win AD could be ADsrvr.mydomain.local. two domains on the same network segment but different because of domsin suffix.
I'd also remind you that there are several manuals you can download from XN. Yes they're very sparse but might help.

Thankyou for replying Gmann.

still persevering here!

The test network is now just a Xandros server, an XP Prof client and a Win2K client connected through a network switch.

We have configured Xandros to provide the DNS service on the network and the DHCP service. We have opened the Xandros firewall to receive all traffic from lan1 as well as to allow traffic out to lan1. The XP firewall has been disabled. There is no firewall on the W2K machine.

Both windows machines are receiving their network addresses from Xandros and they communicate to each other. Back at Xandros the NetworkManager shows that Xandros has provided both windows machines with DHCP leases. It also shows they are each registered in DNS in the Primary forward zone.

Yet we cannot connect either windows machine to the Xandros PDC. When attempting to connect and create machine accounts both report DNS errors. The XP machine is more specific telling us that :

"The error code was 'DNS name does not exist'
(error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)
The query was for the SRV record for_ldaptcp.dc_msdcs.evaluationdomain.local

Common causes of this error include the following:

-The DNS SRV record is not registered in DNS.
-One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its child zone:
evaluationdomain.local
local
-(the root zone)

Can anyone tell me where we should go from here? We are working in the assumption Xandros should be emulating AD. Right?

Thanks for all advice.

aryan,

Make sure that the server is registering itself in DNS. I'm at work and can't see my server but If memory serves me the server should have 3-4 records in DNS all pointing back to itself. Ensure in your server's nic that it's ip is in the first position for dns querys.
