|
|
Now that SP1 has webcam support for Kopete I want to try and hook up a webcam for IM stuff.
I am trying a supposedly Linux (2.6.11Kernel or later) compatible webcam with nothing more than Black screen results. The system sees it and the light comes on when I access it in Kopete but that is all it's doing.
So I thought I would ask all the folks who have working webcams to reply to this thread and say what make AND MODEL of webcam you have that works out of the box.
I can tell you that the Connectland USB "Golfball" webcam does not work out-of-the-box in 4.0 SP1

HI
don't know as we've visited before, if not let me give you a big howdy to the friendliest forum on the net.. really!
A lot of cameras don't need a "driver" as such...
If you would, go to Xandros networks and in the search bar type in "camstream" and install it. You MIGHT have to reboot, but usually linux does not need that. you should see camstream installed as an app under graphics, I can't remember, I'm at work on a windblows machine... but anyway, camstream usually does most of the cameras... try it and come back and give a holler
you have to go to the top left and click one of the two commands, can't remember which, and an interactive box pops up, pick the top setting first, you can always go back and try the others, and the picture should show up in a large gray patterned box..
again, welcome!
ain't XAndros grEAT!

Howdy Woodsmoke,
Thank you for (again) the welcome. We had a prior exchange about the networking and security suite in 4.0. But it's always great to hear from you.
I did load Camstreams but it is still the same/similar thing. As soon as I try to load the camera I am greeted with a blank window in the viewer and the Camstream freezes up.
The system does see the camera. As a matter of fact the light on the camera comes on when I try to access it. Ubfortunately that's as far as it gets.
So I thought I would hear from other forum members what kind of hardware they are using in the webcam department and go from there. |

I have a Creative Webcam III that has worked flawlessly since RedHat 8. I bought it then off pricewatch for something like 27 bucks (bulk model- who needs documentation when it isn't applicable, right). Uses the OV511 driver. 640x480 Resolution. Bandwidth hog though, no compression.. Make sure you are using USB2, as it chuggs on USB1... Otherwise, highly recommended.. Mic is a seperate generic computer mic... Eliminates Camera / Sound card fighting for /dev/dsp. _________________

Thanks redrum. That is exactly the kind of info I am looking for! That model camera is now on the top of my list.
Anybody else?

Well I have done some digging into why my "Golfball" webcam doesn't work. I went to this website:
http://mxhaard.free.fr/spca5xx.html
To save alot of scrolling I will paste my camera info below:
Name.....Vendor ID......Product ID.....Pseudo.....Bridge........Sensor
Sangha.....0x0c45..........0x60c0........Sn-535.....sn9c105.....Mi0360
So anyway it is supposed to work. But as we all know,,,,,,,,
I checked the Spca5xx module on the same site and found that the one used by Xandros is for kernels below 2.6.11. The latest one they list is for all kernels above that. Just so you all know I have the 2.6.18 kernel in per the SP1 update to 4.0. I have tried the SMP (deault) and changed to the UNI kernel just to rule out that.
I would hazard a guess that Xandros has modified their version of the driver/module which is why they are using an "old" version.
So I downloaded the newest module which is in tar.gz format.
I can't find any info on the site about how to update the module in Xandros. Can someone point me to a site that outlines how to blow-up, er, break, ah, I mean "update" my system?
I'm sure I am missing something really obvious (As usual) but that seems to be my best bet to try and get my existing webcam working rather than just forking out more cash. |

If your webcam uses the spca5xx driver, I'd check this article. I made a driver that works with that driver that may or may not work with your system.
http://forums.xandros.com/viewtopic.php?t=28267
Although my driver should uninstall it automatically, you will want to make sure to uninstall the old driver first, . _________________

Hey redrum,
I tried the link and followed the instuctions. Unfortunately I am still stuck with the same black screen. Is the version of Spca5xx the latest build in your driver?
No matter what, thanks for the effort. I'll keep digging on my end. |

Please type lsmod and post the output. Let's make sure the driver loaded. The spca5xx driver is no longer used in the later codebase. The driver I built is the latest version. Also a reboot may be necessary to load the driver. _________________

It looks like the driver is loaded properly, so it may be a specific issue with your camera (chipset revision or something like that) and the driver.. You may wish to contact the developer regarding this issue.. Unfortunately my specialty is packaging drivers, not debugging / configuring them... You also may need to use spcatools, though in the case of the logitech cam, nothing extra was needed, so I doubt it. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful
If you manage to get a patched driver, I'd be happy to build it for you. _________________

I use a Logitech Quickcam Communicate STX - seemed to work out of the box with X$ and Camstream.
