Posted: Fri Dec 08, 2006 12:54 pm Post subject: Xandros 4 Professional - HP LaserJet printing problems |
|
|
I just upgraded from Xandros 3 to 4. I was able to get my HP LaserJet 1022n printer to work in 3 but it doesn't in 4.
It appears that the printer is installed as I see the note in Printer Properties that indicates ...
Printer Model: HP Laserjet 1022, Foomatic + foo2zjs (recommended)
Printer Status: idle, accepting jobs.
(there is no HP LaserJet 1022n printer to select, so I selected HP LaserJet 1022)
However, printing a 'Test' page doesn't work, and neither does printing anything else.
I've searched but can't find any solution to this problem in the threads.
Does anyone have any idea what to do with this problem?
Any help would be greatly appreciated |

I have a HP LaserJet 4050 N (LaserJet 40 50 selected) and it works great in X4.
Did you configure your printer as Network or Local printer in X4 (I used Network printer) ?
I would suggets you go to URL http://localhost:631/ with your browser to check if there are any installation errors (most errors can be seen there). Select manage Printers and then Configure and chech if you can see any Red alerts. |

Actually, my printer is not on a network ... so I configured it as a Local printer.

I tried this but didn't see any errors ...
I then removed the printer and added it again using the Xandros Control Centre -> Printers -> Add ... menu, configured it via URL http://localhost:631/ , but still can't print a test page.
Any other suggestions? |

Check put the files under /var/log/cups/ and see if you can find any related error messages.
Other than that I have no other ideas (have mostly worked with network printers). I'll come back if I get some other ideas.

Do I need to reboot or do something like that after uninstalling or installing printers? I didn't think I'd need to, but ...

No, you should not need to reboot, but it can't hurt to try.
Check the files under /var/log/cups/ and see if you can find any related error messages. |

Here are a couple of lines from error_log in /var/log/cups ... I don't know if these help diagnose the problem ...
I [08/Dec/2006:15:23:17 -0400] Started backend /usr/lib/cups/backend/usb (PID 29140) for job 19.

Is your printer connected to an USB port ?
Also if you goto http://localhost:631/ Manage Jobs , do you see your job there (possibly with an error ??). If not, click on Show Completed Job and check the same.
What happens if you go to http://localhost:631/ Manage Printers and click on Print Test Page ? |

Can you check if /dev/usb/lp0 exists ?
From a console do this,
ls -l /dev/usb/lp0
and paste the result. |

I have very poor knowledge about USB printers, so lets proceed out try and error routine.
Can you open a console as root and execute following command
grep lp0 /var/log/kern/*
and pase if you get any printouts. I'm just trying to see if we can determine exactly what fails (so far we jsut knows something failes, but not what or how).
A very long shot is to check your BIOS settings as well and see if there is anything printer related that can be configured. |

I've seen this behavior before...
You may need a printer definition file.
My guess: Try downloading and install the PPD file and see if that does the trick. Here's the support page along with download links:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=HP-LaserJet_1022
I hope that helps! _________________ geekydude

This is what I get after I try printing a test page ...

I don't know how to check the BIOS settings. |
