Hi,

I really like the coloured look of the KDE shutdown screen (with the kde dragon sleeping in the moon?) and wondered whether it could be installed on my X4 instead of the blue/gray logout/shutdown screen?

I've read various posts about not being able to install various editions of KDE ontop of Xandros and wondered whether such an application as this would need that?

Or is it much simpler? Very Happy Shocked Rolling Eyes

Is it possible?

Thanks

Ahoy brave souls in the lab!

I'm still looking to find the nice dragon-on-the-moon shutdown image (kde default) on my xandros and spotted this on kde-look.org...

http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=47593

It's a Hibernate/Suspend Button for KDE Shutdown Dialog. The download is given for debian as i386 package called " ksmserver_3.5.5a-2.2_i386.deb "

I wondered whether, if I downloaded this and installed it, would it give me the kde shutdown screen rather than the blue & gray rectangle from xandros? I don't want to get rid of xandros by any means - merely want the dragon to shutdown rather than the 3 blue buttons Embarassed

More importantly, would it work in xandros without breaking anything?

This week hubby is putting together a spare box that I can use as a sandpit, but I still would like to ask whether ksmserver 'dabbling' is ok or not??

Any takers?

kind regards

SeaSTAR

******** Update from compiler of kde-look hibernation/suspend package ***

I wrote him asking if he knew whether installing this in Xandros might work - he has replied with...

Quote:
.... Well, from what you say it does sound like they've patched ksmserver in
some way. In that case, the only way you are going to get it the way you
want is to rebuild the kdebase module from source, reverting that patch
or not including it.

Dunno what Xandros' packaging system is or what their policy on source
code is...in Debian you'd do something like:

1. apt-get source kdebase
2. remove the patch from debian/patches and then dpkg-buildpackage
-rfakeroot.
3. install the updated packages using 'dpkg -i'.

I'd appreciate any help anyone can give on interpretation Rolling Eyes

I've spent long hours trying to recompile stuff in kdebase with no results...
You're looking for this:
ftp://ftp2.xandros.com/src/pool/xandros4.0-src/main/k/kdebase
If you know how to compile stuff then is going to take a while as the kdebase package recompiles everything.

I suppose you could do a side installation of KDE using konstruct that wouldn't interfere with Xandros' version of KDE:
http://forums.xandros.com/viewtopic.php?t=20032

Some things are easier todo than others as kdm is also part of kdebase and people in the lab have been banging their heads against their monitors trying to modify kdm. Wink

Aldube...

You realise this is like telling a 3 year old to take the controls of a Formula One ??

Shocked Shocked Shocked

Well, I HAVE got a sandpit now Laughing

what do they say... "you never find new lands until you loose sight of the shore..."

do you think it applies to kde too? Rolling Eyes

I am not using Kde right now, but I think that you want to look in:
/usr/share/apps/kdm/pics/

Hi,

Thanks Pitheris!

I had already identified that I have xandros's shutdown images in /usr/share/apps/kdm/pics ...

I EVEN have the konqi dragon in with xandros's shutdown images here - /usr/share/apps/ksmserver/pics (shutdownkonq.png)

*now incidentally showing new hibernate & suspend buttons in this folder since SP1 download !! *

So it's not just a question of changing the image from xandros's blue/grey rectangle to the dragon one i.e. renaming it, I need to find out where the command is which TELLS shutdown to use these images as the shutdown images (the orientation is wrong for one thing, the layout of the buttons in xandros differs to the layout buttons in KDE's shutdown screen too)

See what I mean??

Have you looked in the file
/etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc

Look for a line like this:

Theme=/usr/share/apps/kdm/themes/XYZ

Just a guess.

Maybe install a kdm theme (or create your own)

Pitheris,

Yes, looked and saw this...

Code:
Theme=/usr/share/apps/kdm/themes/xandros-desktop

Wouldn't that be referring to the whole desktop theme perhaps rather than just the shutdown screen maybe???

Dunno...

will take another look at kde-look!

thanks

No, it is just the kdm theme for the login/logout kdm program screens and display settings, not the kde theme for the whole desktop. But you can always try making changes to it and undo it if you are not happy with your changes.

There is a relativly new program to manage the kdm themes here:
http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=22120
I haven't tried it.
