Guys.... I'd like to dabble in programming in Python but I can find no links in XN to the complete Python package. XN says that it's installed but it must not be the complete package. I'm supposed to be able to type in python at the command line and bring up the IDE. I downloaded Python-2.4.4.tgz and was about to try to install it according to their instructions but thought I'd better ask the experts first. I've installed it in other distros in the past - from their repositories - but am liking Xandros a lot. Would like to give it a try here.... Thanks!

Nevermind.... I found a repository to install from. I AM curious though..... Could I have taken that source file and installed it or would I have run into so many problems that it just wasn't worth it? I am trying to make the switch from Windows to Xandros and this is the most difficult part. I have NO idea where the individual files are placed so they would be impossible to un-install unless they somehow showed up in the XN program. I installed one program - a password program - and never could find the executable... lol. So I guess that it'll sit on my computer until I re-install the OS. Hmmmmm... reminds me of Windows OS a bit. I DO love this distro and really don't want to mess it up but I do like to experiment. I just wish that linux would standardize the software install proceedure. Also.... a random thought! I've always wondered why most hardware manufacturers don't support linux.... It would be almost impossible for them. So many distros and kernel versions it would like trying to hit a moving target. If linux would standardize what they need from a driver they'd blow Windows out of the water..... Sorry for rambling... javascript:emoticon(' Very Happy

Linux is standerdizing on installation processes through LSB.
If an app is LSB compliant and the distro is LSB compliant it should install the package and setup everything according to spec.

I also thing Freedesktop is doing something to help with a way to install into both KDE and Gnome with the same install procedrue where menu entries and such will get installed for either desktop environment.
