Since I am on my way to replace my X4 beta installation with X4 HEP, I thought why not try installing KDE 3.5.x and see how it goes.

The easiest way I found is probably to use the backported version from the repository below. If you intend to try this out, do it on a spare computer since the net result may no be what you espected. Some findings:

- The look and feel is a bit different.

- Launch menu is rearanged. This can be fixed by replacing /etc/xdg/menus/kde-applications.menu with the one provided by kdelibs-data v3.4.2 from Xandros repository.

- Xandros components for Control Center, although present on the system, they are not used buy Control Center 3.5.x. Its probably just a matter of reconfiguring some Control Center config files to make use of them. But I have not bothered to investigate it furthur.

- apt-get works slightly differently. The same version as used in Debian Unstable (I think) is used requering DEB packages to installe to be signed. Otherwise you allway get a question whether you really want to install the packages. This may prohibit XN from working properly (have not tried).

- Xandros Debian Unsupported site does not work anymore (something about not correct md5sum). Perhaps has something to do with new apt-get.

- You probably find other strange things.

Other than that most other things (applets like Network Connection, XFM etc.) seem to work as normal.

Code:

deb http://www.backports.org/debian/ sarge-backports main

To install it, after adding the above repository, execute :

1. apt-get update
2. apt-get upgrade
3. apt-get dist-upgrade

The 2 is required to avoid removing xandros specific stuff in 3. Some non-xandros packages may still be removed in 3 (3 on my system). But they seem unimportant. If you want to check out what will be removed first, use

apt-get -s dist-upgrade

to simulate the upgrade.

That's all.

I was on my way here to ask if anyone had a repository for upgrading KDE and saw yer post. Where'd you come across that info? It seemed to work fine and not remove anything I needed, I was a little worried about xprint was all. But, after the upgrade, I rebooted, and got the Penguin splash screen while shutting down, and then my lilo boot menu, and then the Penguin splash screen again. And then.. Text Mode login! I log in, and I'm stuck at bash prompt! Shocked I tried "startx" "xstart" "xwindows" "kde"... none of that worked, and then tried running some of the scripts in init.d folder. KDM would run, and a couple others, but most of them said command not found... and then I tried running apt-get -f install it said it had 2 packages to install and 6 to upgrade, But it was then I found that even my network hadn't started yet!

So after none of that did anything, I put in my X4 CD and ran Restore from the troubleshooting menu.. Complete waste of time. All it did was re-write my lilo.conf file and take Linspire out of my boot menu! Funny isn't it? So good thing I had it backed up on hdb since I couldn't figure out how to edit it. So I copied that overtop of the old one, ran lilo and went to bed, and here I am on Linspire at the forum! Smile

I wonder if I could get my network to start, if running apt-get-f install would fix this? Or maybe I'm missing a file somewheres? It seems like I'm just a small step away from trying out my new kde, but I have no idea what it is! I can still access my xandros partition from Linspire, and that probably helps somewhat... Got any ideas?

Hey arne.. I just did a custom build of 3.5.5 (from source) and noticed windows sharing was broken.. Is this the case as well using the upgrade option you just mentioned?

Redrum,

I just had 3.5 for a very short period. Never tested windows sharing.

Rhighfil82,

I'll come back if I have some ideas (I'm a bit tired right now).

Nevermind... I just installed Suse 10.2 on another partition... Comes with the choice to use Gnome or KDE 3.5.5 stock, and I dont gotta break Xandros to get the newest KDE. Yay!!

Hello all you Xandrosians Very Happy !

Started practice on Mandrake. Tested Mepis a few months, Switched to
Mandriva. Moved to XOS3. Used both one year each. Now its XOS41 time.
FINALLY SOLVED INSTALLATION PROBLEM with nForce1+Matrox G450.
check: http://forums.xandros.com/viewtopic.php?t=29439
Uses Backports for upgrading several programs not found in Xandros,
archlug, x.oi.d, redrums and debian-multimedia repositories. Works well.

Got a crazy idea and tested upgrading using Synaptic with only kdelibs
(Backports) and gcc (Etch), without upgrading kde desktop. The meaning
with this was to get new Koffice (backports) installed without compiling.
Upgraded Synaptic too. Almost everything works normally. THE ONLY
PROBLEM WAS PRINTER. Launch menu is rearranged, more programs
appears. Will repeat experiments later.

CONCLUSIONS OF UPGRADING SYNAPTIC, check reply (no:9) at:
http://forums.xandros.com/viewtopic.php?t=28198

Discovered this tread after doing this. Wondering what you experts
are saying about the benefits with theese upgrades.

Other than certain programs requiring these later versions of KDE, I can't think of any. Maybe just 'cause it's cool?
