I'm looking to purchase a computer to use with Xandros Server 1.0 as a VPN server for an SMB.
Can anyone suggest an ideal hardware configuration for this?
Thanks!

I've just done some very preliminary research, and have come up with the HP Proliant ML110 G3 as a likely prospect.
This is one of HP's entry-level small business servers, so seems ideally suited to the task I have in mind.
I'd be grateful for feedback/input from anyone who's familiar with it.
Thanks!

| All you want is it to act as a VPN server? Nothing else? Xandros Server is a bit more comprehensive than strictly a VPN server. |

VPN is simply where I want to start, because there's an immediate need for that. But I would definitely want to go on to other uses.

Xandros Server is version 1.0, not 4.0. (I assume you're asking about Server, not Home Premium 4.0.) Besides, I haven't installed it yet, though I have the boxed edition. I'm waiting until I have a dedicated machine for that - hence, this thread.

| Well, upon looking at the specs, I can't see any show stopping incompatibilities. The only question I'd ask wouldbe what kind of RAID controller are they including in the machine. |

The only info I can see on HP's site is "Optional 6 port SATA RAID Controller (SATA Models)."
Just curious... What are the issues around the kind of RAID controller?

Hey Alan,
I'm thinking you've probably gone ahead with your server purchase for XS.
I'm currently using a white box system with an Asus P4P800 SE board with a 2.6E processor (overclocked to 3.2) and 1GB of RAM, with 3 ide drives. It's seriously snappy on the server side, even the GUI is very responsive.
I'd say the proliant is probably a good choice, although if you are really considering utilizing most of the features (if not all), I'd definately recommend beefing up the system before you make it live. Otherwise, making changes to the system will of course require taking the system down and potentially impacting your network and services. You know that, of course, but for anyone who is just getting into servers, it's something that really needs to be understood. Overkill is never overkill if it's done wisely.
If I had a few more buck to throw at the server, I would have added another gig of RAM, changed the board to accomodate 2 - 3.0E CPUs, and put 4 400GB SATA drives in there, striping them into two pairs. That would make it scream and probably handle pretty much anything a few hundred users could throw at it... |
