Hi
The the title just about sum's up my problem, the sound worked fine with xandros 3 standard home, but after I installed 4, there's no sound even, after running alsaconf.
As far as I can tell it reconises my intel chip, it is a Intel ICH5 (DUPLEX), but no sound.
Please help, or I am $ 40 down the drain.

you need to run alsaconf in a root/administrator console. I ran into the same problem with both X3 SP2 and X4 (do a search of my post)

If that fails can you give some more details about your mobo or laptop

Hope this helps

Hi
I logged on as root and ran alsaconf, still no sound.
My laptop is a desktop replacment, Clevo D500E, sold in the UK by AJP.
I realy don't understan why the sound does not work, because as I said in my previous post, the sound worked on first boot with Xandros 3.
Hope you have some ideas.
Jim

Could try fiddling with sound settings in the control centre. Try the alternative sound system and also shutting off duplex. It's odd as I've a ICH5 chipset on my tosh laptop

This might be of help - ran into difficulties with my desktop with an audigy Z2 card. This thread helped by listing an alternative sound mixer control

Ok. I have fiddled more than a one armed violin player, still no sound, I installed alsamixergui, but nothing I did seemed to have any effect.
One thing I did notice was at boot if I pressed escape and looked at the text boot the the O/S can not find any volumes, is this the course of my problems?

Boy am I fed up with this O/S.
I have no sound and now I find that the applications are freezing, I have 1024Mb of memory, and a P4 3Gb processor, and I still have to keep logging out to clear the frozen app's.
I am think I am going to go back to Xandros 3, at least that work properly, I also think I am going to write and ask for my money back, this is has just been disaster for me.
A fairly fed up customer.

Sorry.
Just realised I had logged in under my old login of wheelyjim for the last post.
I have gone back to Xandros 3, though where the sound works at first boot and my app's don't freeze, in my opinion Xandros 4 is a complet disaster.
Still fed up.

For sound, you could have tried to right click on the sound icon in the system tray and choose "Select Master Channel ...", which would have brought up a pop-up window. The list of available sound master channels shown varies with the system. But on my I had to change the default PC-Speaker to Front to make sound work. If you ever run X4 again, try the suggestion above an see if you can find a sound master channel that work for you.

Other than that X4 is an excelent product. Works like a charm on my relatively new laptop (no application freez). Its definitely NOT a complet disaster. Wink

Hi Arne Anka
I don't want to be rude, but do you read the post people put up, I right clicked, and tried every combination you could think of, the sound just would not work.
I am glad that Xandros 4 works is not a disaster for you, but compared to Xandros 3 (on my system) it reallsucks.
I just do not understand how or why, 3 works perfectly, and 4 does not.

Sorry, missed that you had tried the sound mixer. Embarassed

Perhaps I could have helped you. But you sound a bit too frustrated to go that path.

Good luck with X3. Wink

Glad you found a solution.

Would you mind sharing how you solved your problem (there seem to be others having sound problem as well) ?

Hi Arne
This is a copy of the e-mail sent me by Spencer, the Support guy.

Thank you for reinstalling and sending in the file.

Your sound card should be supported by Xandros Dekstop v4 as the correct
driver is there. Can you please log into the coputer as the root user
and click on Launch -> Application -> Accessories -> Text Editor to open
the application. Once opened, please click on File -> Open and in the
'File name:' area, type in /etc/lilo.conf and click on Open. Please
change the following section from:

image=/vmlinuz
label=Xandros_Desktop_3_Standard
vga=0xf04
root=/dev/hda8
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.6.11-x1.gz
append="quiet rw acpi=on "

To this. Please note that 8 spaces that you see in the email are a TAB
indentation and it must be the TAB:

image=/vmlinuz
label=Xandros_Desktop_3_Standard
vga=0xf04
root=/dev/hda8
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.6.11-x1.gz
append="quiet rw noapic nolapic acpi=ht nomce "

Considering that this is the text from your v3 lilo.conf file, it will
be a little different for your v4 once you have installed it. IE, the
label= line will say something like "Xandros_4.0_Home_Edition_Premium"
and the root= and initrd= lines should be left unchnged. The only line
that is to be changed is the append= line and please ensure that you
include the trailing space.

Once this is done, please open a console window and rerun lilo to commit
the changes.

Please let us know if this works. ( It Does!)

As you will see the trick is to change the apci line, from =on, to =ht nomce

Hope this helps.

Regards Jim

Hi Jim,

How do they figure these things out? I've not encountered the "nolapic acpi=ht nomce " parameters before. It doesn't look like English, maybe it is a secret Druid incantation? So it's off to the Internet to see what these are - or maybe a visit to Cerne Abbas. Surprised

If you have the kernel source installed, you can look in the Documents directory to find a description of each kernel option available (think the file is called kern-param.txt or something similar). Sometimes, just by looking at error messages in /var/log/kern one can figure out what to use (it even happens that the kernel actual makes suggestions).
