Like I said in a previous post I was very impressed with xandros server, they had it good, make linux easy on the server front, so impressed was I that as soon as xandrom home edition came out last night I paid $79.00 for the download version and began the install .The website had given the impression that this was for the digital age new apps ect ect.
The install went smooth , I opened photo manager god damn it " digikam"
music manager" amarok" codeweavers didnt matter to me as I have a license anyway for it, The system appeared stable but guys honestly what a hoax I use ubuntu for day to day use I have all this for free digikam and amarok why would I pay an extra $ 40 over the regular edition of xandros.
all I can say is xandros should stick with the server [which is excellent].
Creating the impression on their website that this new version is full of new stuff blows my mind, firstly kde 3.42 open office is slow as hell, my machine is a amd 3500 mhz cpu and 4 gigs ddr ram , anyway overall Im sticking to ubuntu I installed xandros last night and put ubuntu back on today , totally disgusted that I wasted $79.00 |

Of course I am upset and its not a continuing rant I installed xandros 4 the other night and was disapointed , yesterday after work I decided to give it a shot , my usual a few hard reboots test the apps program integration ect ect.
It is not a bad distro and yes it appears stable , I just dont like that they had a $40 version and a $80 version and that they took 2 mainstream gnu apps and advertied them as the latest xandros app ect. |

I disagree, Mike. Yes, all eight posts were negative. But if you read them I don't hear a troll, I hear a dis-satisfied customer with v4. He loves the server edition and paid $80 dollars on day one of v4's release. That's a lot of money for a troll to pay.
In some of his eight posts he explains exactly what he dislikes about v4. Is he wrong? Is the digital pictures app not digikam? Is the digital music app not amarok? Feel free to corrrect him if he's wrong. If you don't correct him (or can't) I think the wrong person is being called 'troll'. |

Mate, I would suggest you complain directly to Xandros about your disappointment with Xandros Desktop. Yes, you are upset, I think you have established that fact... attempt to get your money back perhaps, or perhaps you troll elsewhere. Mate, I love this operating system it is excellent and the fact that Xandros did not develop a photo or song tool like Linspire doesn't upset me in any way. _________________ Registered Ex-Linux User #377020

It doesn't upset you that for $40 you could get the xandros 4.0 and install synaptic enable the debian repository and add in a few debian repos and have the exact same thing. It makes me mad that upon looking at the website and I suggest you do www.xandros.com
My impression is that this version is the be all and end all of consumers digital needs. I guess if you like paying the extra $40 for digikam and amarok
then its ok .The whole idea of paying for a distro is the extras that they give you such as mp3 codecs and video codecs as well as ease of use ,
I do not mind paying for distros or software I have a multi use crossover license as well as nero for linux, and my 2 sons subscription to cedega but I hate being given the impression that Im getting 1 thing when in fact its something else.I think more people should rant about things linux [all distros]
and then maybe we the users can help our favorite distro whatever that is. |

Don't forget the premium edition also has CrossOver Office, Versora Desktop and the NTFS reading software. DigiKam and Amarok are NOT the only differences between the two versions.
Having said that, I am a bit uncomfortable with Xandrso implying that these two apps are anything other than what they are---freely available open source software. Have they been heavily tweaked by Xandros? That would at least make it seem a little more reasonable.
Just my 2 cents....... DR _________________ D.J. Ross

| I already have a crossover license but thats neither here nor there, What commercial distros will do is get the digikam developers to put in a [in this case xandros] boot splash but thats it nothing is tweaked or added same with amarok the developers for a contribution do this.My point is if its digikam say its digikam if its amarok say its amarok let the buyer choose on crossover ect I would have paid $ 40 for the home version and installed the repos myself to get digikam and amarok , Am I making sense here I only paid $ 80 because I thought I was getting a newly developed photo app and music manager as their website advert claimed!! |

Xandros also calls Kopete "Instant Messaging", Xine "Video Player", XMMS "Mp3 Player", arK "Archiving Tool", and kate "Text Editor" .... Are you mad that they didn't develop their own IM client, or Video Player aswell?
I know you're upset that Music Manager and Photo Manager wasn't what you thought they'd be, but Premium is more than only those two applications. Security Suite, Write-to-NTFS, and much more.
Also keep in mind that Xandros aims at people new to linux. Back when I tried Xandros 1.0 (which was my first linux distro), I had no idea how to install anything but what Xandros provided to me. My mother won't be able to install Amarok from another repository. So by adding Music Manager as a feature for Home Premium, they made Amarok available to people that don't know how to get it elsewhere. Also, what sounds best "Ability to install and play Windows games" or "Cedega"? I know what I would put on the feature chart if I were to advertise. Get my point?
If you've bought all versions of Xandros, you should be aware that they do rename GPL applications.

And Linspire is guilty as well they call mplayer the desktop linux video player and as such have been blacklisted by mplayer http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/projects.html
scroll to bottom of page and see.
I have no problem with renaming apps but when on the front page you give the impression that these are the latest and greatest solutions. Advertise the security suite advertise ease of use but dont advertise a photo manager and music manager as unique when in fact they are already out there and in use for free. |

One thing you've got to realize is that you really are not the target audience for Xandros- the guy who is running Windows and is sick of all the spyware/malware/virus issues is.
For them they want to know if they can use the mp3's they have downloaded and use the nifty camera they have- and they need help switching from Windows to "that thing they call Linux"- they want to be reassured that this stuff will work.
That said, I would bet that Xandros has done some work making amarok and digicam work with the KDE version they are using- that has been the case always before when something was only available in the premium section.
If they haven't done any enhancement, then I really agree that photo manager and music manager should be included in the basic version- there's enough other stuff in premium that warrants the price. _________________ --

I don't hang out as often as I'd like on the Xandros user forums, but I knew well in advance that the digital audio was going to be amarok. This was generally regarded as good news. I didn't care enough about photo management to read about it, but that was probably known in advance too.
I can see being upset if you thought you were buying several brand spanking new aps and got industry standard open source aps that were tweaked and tested with Xandros. But that's the application version of what is done with the OS. Debian is tweaked and extended to form Xandros. We don't insist that Xandros be a clean room development effort starting with a Linux kernel.
The only way any Linux distro is going to compete in the low cost, high feature marketplace is by leveraging the open source efforts of others. I do think attribution should be given, financial support given whenever possible, and code improvements be folded back into the open source effort. That's how the game is played.
I don't like false advertising or weasel marketing, but I don't see Xandros as being particularly bad about that. In literature attracting Windows converts, there is a simplified message that conveys the features that can be expected, but it takes very little research on this forum to know exactly what you're getting before you buy.
Hey Irish. Sorry you're not happy with X4. After wanting it for 8 months I'm now a bit too busy with work to install it because I put off a lot of other PC maintenance to do at the same time, but in the next couple of weeks I'll buy X4 and install it, and if it goes well, my sister will be buying two copies that I'll be installing for her small business. I've been wanting to get them off Windows for a couple of years now. At least while I'm waiting, you guys can do the gamma testing for me.
I don't want Xandros recreating perfectly good applications. I want them to pick the best and integrate them. I want their efforts spent making sure the OS is stable, secure, and auto-detects and configs as much hardware as possible. I couldn't care less what photo manager software they choose. I'm hoping for better support for notebook PC keyboards, mice, wireless networking, video.... I can add whatever apps I want. It's a lot harder for me to add support for some notebook PC Chipset From Hell (TM).
Side note: Linux is getting popular enough that a major OEM should offer a Linux friendly line of notebooks. They don't need to ship with Linux, although it'd be great to save the $50 Microsoft tax for an OS I hate that goes straight into the trash. But they should pick hardware that is well supported in the Linux world. It would be fairly easy to do, and they'd have a huge advantage in 5-6% of the market. That seems worth doing. |
