| I play with alot of linux distros but mainly I have settled on ubuntu as my desktop of choice. My kids use a mix of linux distros, anyway we are a linux house Windows hasnt been booted up here in 5 years or more. last night on distrowatch I seen that xandros 4 had been released , so recentley at work I was extremely impressed with xandros server so much so that I ordered 4 licences for work.Alas guess what Xandros 4.0 I paid $79 for it downloaded it on my fios connection at 20mb per sec and installed it . Their photo manager is digikam, their music manager is amarok, they advertised this on their website yesterday as unique!! Every year I buy a new version and every year I feel screwed. Their server is good I will say that but desktop!!! At least linspire build their own applications lphoto and lsongs ect. |

You're paying for ease of use and intergration. If you feel like you get screwed every year then why not WAIT to hear more reviews before you buy something so quick. _________________ Debian & openSUSE |

http://www.xandros.com/products/home/home_edition.html
I am not saying its a bad distro Im just saying that they took open sourse software added it into the delux model and advertised it as " The Digital Solution', |

Hi Irish Rebel:
I've never had a need for a server but Xandros Server has had good reviews. Could you let me know what you especially like about it?
Cheers

I run a business based on providing linux solutions and open source solutions, I buy or download distros every week and test and evaluate as to their role if any in my business.
Xandros.com website this moring looks as though it has reinvented the wheel
I am not saying its a bad distro , just that what it advertises and what you get are two differant things. |

I guess they are just trying to add spice to the Premium with "buzz" words. I agree that the Photo and Music stuff should be in the standard Home version too.
Premium is basically:
Xandros Home - $39.95
Versora Progression Desktop- $29.00
CodeWeavers CrossOver Office Standard - $39.95
Paragon Software NTFS driver - $19.95
and two free programs for music and audio.
All intergrated within the system for $80
Since I already own Crossover office Pro, maybe I'll just get Paragon's driver so I can use it with multiple distros. hmmm...
EDIT: Oh... I'm not sure what is on the Premium versions extra CD?!? _________________ Debian & openSUSE |

So, in theory...I could purchase the Home edition and then just download digicam and amaroK. I already own Crossover Pro...so I can add that. That leaves the security suite...which I can use my own firewall and AV. I don't have windows on my system, so no need for ntfs read/write.
Therefore, it is not worth the extra $$ for premium. I will purchase the Home version and then a yearly subscription to XN, add all my other stuff and have my own version of premium! Unless there is something else I missed. _________________ X4 Premium, Arch 0.8 Voodoo

Still no LiveCD to test-drive, eh? From the early responces, I'll not buy v4 after all -- unlesss the reviews suddenly get better.
Isn't Xandros pretty well the ONLY distro left without a LiveCD?
Edit: TurboLinux doesn't have one either.

Yes, I LOVE Live CD's... it's nice to be able to test the distro to see what it recognizes before installing it on my nice Dual Core desktop.
I'm sure it will work on my laptop since other current distros do. _________________ Debian & openSUSE |

Yes, for a distro that seems to be going after the new from windows crowd a livecd would be a great way to show the reluctant what it can do without having to do an install. |

The Premium edition, for the Xandros Photo Manager....is it Digikam? If so, I doubt they will allow you to download it for free. I guess you can try the Debian Sarge version from the Debian repo, but I am not willing to risk $40 to try. |

Best way as I can see it is to wait for open circulation addition , install synaptic enable and add repositories and use it, also digikam is their photo manager they just added their logo to it the same with amarok the exact same versions as you get anywhere .
do you see what I am saying , no disrespect to the distro but look at the xandros website wouldnt you feel like this was some kind of breakthru photo and music manager suite? |
