history: built my own pc, and the windows continually gets machine exception 9c errors, so with a different hard drive I installed xandros. I love it .

this is being used as a media machine so TV is monitor, right now though I don't have a sound card yet I'm using onboard sound and video(fyi if you have any good ideas for video card with HDTV tuner included i'm all ears)

the mobo is "winfast 6150k8ma" Trying to fit alot into a micro atx case.

not important but incase you wanna know amd athlon 64, 2GB ram, windows is on 120GB SATA hard drive, xxandros on 300GB SATA harddrive, 2 DVD, 1 floppy, 1 pci wireless card, thanks to another threads help I got to work.

I've been playin with this for more than a week.
New message if this helps ANYONE help me.
artsd status:
artsd is not configured for realtime schedualing or manually started without artswrapper.

The other fun one is in control center under hardware devices, sometimes is displays "no info about sound card" and other times it tells me the driver and alsaconf something 10 emulation, but follows with audio device not enabled in config.

HELP, very frustrated.

Please provide more info about the sound system on your motherboard.
In Control Center, what do you see under the hardware detection for sound card?

No worries in the delay, I just figured it was a problem alot of ppl have.
the sound info, when I startup shows no information. After I run alsaconf i get

Sound driver:3.8.1a-980706(Alsa V1.0.9rc2 emulation code)
kernael 2.6.11
Configuration options 0

installed drivers
type 10: Alsa emulation

card config
no soundcards

audio devices: not enabled in conifg
synth devices: not enabled in config

onboard in off in bios.

currently with sound blaster audigy ls
but spent numerous tries with the onboard AC 97

by the way, everything that can shows as no such file or directory for /dev/dsp, if that helps someone help me.

Please clarify:

1. You got no sound with on-board AC97

2. You then put in a SoundBlast Audigy card? Do you get sound with the Audigy card?

3. Is the on-board sound activated or inactivated in the BIOS?

4. Does hardware detection detect either the on-board sound or the Audigy card, without running alsaconfig?

Here's my machine when I go to Control Center > Hardware Information > Hardware Detection and select Audio Adaptor (first item on the menu list):

class = 0x040100
classname = Multimedia audio controller
desc = VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller
kerneldrivers = snd-via82xx
manu = VIA Technologies, Inc.
pci = 0x1106, 0x3059, 0x1565, 0x8714
revision = 50
subdesc = 8714
submanu = Biostar Microtech Int'l Corp

AC97 is a specification, and different manufacturers have different implementations that require different kernel drivers. So what we're asking is who manufactured your AC97 on-board sound chip.

I got no sound with the onboard
I installed the audigy, and shut down the onboard in bios. still no sound

hardware detection picks up the audigy, and mine looks similar to yours, of course the fields are different but the important thing is the fields are filled in with driver types, classname, pci, etc...

im not infront of my xandros box right now.

I've even reinstalled the OS and got nothing??????

As far As the AC 97 I gave up on it and am working on trying to get the sound card to work. Other people on this forum got it to work. But those people have yet to respond to me. Possible busy or don't frequent this forum to much. I've e-mailed them too and nothing unfortunately.

got an e-mail from david_wrigley (thank you ) but unfortunately his updated alsa drivers and installation instructions didn't help. Is it possible I got a bad distribution. I downloaded it, I've reinstalled several times, maybe I should get another copy and try again.

If you think so, give me an idea on the best place to get it.

thanks again to all who've spent time on this.

hey GriffIT34,

i can't help b/c i am having the same problem as you and i have even installed 2 different xandros products but same result - no sound! as you, i started with onboard sound - no sound, then added a sound card which gets detected and all the fields are populated as yours - but no sound, i have added my driver to the modules file, used alsaconf (which said everything was good), tried snd-configure but it wouldn't work, and even tried to use modconf but don't know what parameters to use so that didn't help me, so i hope someone can help with this, because xandros is a good OS and i know it would be 10x better with sound.

thanks

I'm with you, I love xandros. But this is at home and I want multimedia which = sound. I'm very frustrated with this, the second part was a DVI problem. But that happens in windoze too so I can't blame the OS.

I was considering buyin xandros, but I don't want to spend the $$ if I can't get sound to work.

edit:

well I have made it so my card works with alsaconf.
But it oly did work after I went to /bin , I think? and found the alsamixer , and ran it.

Now if I could only make the drivers load every time it boots , it would be great. Except that now I am not allowed to use my CD player unless logged in as admin.

Gonna try a couple of more things , still.

Got a second wind in te anger dept. No sound won't kill me so if I do get sick of it , Ican use a PCI sound card I guess.

Wish I could, but this seems to be an indepth problem. Some folks are getting it to work without tweaking in the slightest, but others like myself cannot get anything to function properly. I've tried with the onboard AC97, and then went out and purchased a SB audigy and that didn't work.

In fact I've grown so frustrated I've postponed purchasing xandros which was my original intension if all had gone well, for windows media center. I'm really trying to get away from windows but fact is, I can hear what I'm doing and I've spent countless hours working on this xandros sound issue.

I'll pick up the good cause again in a couple of months after I move to my new place.
