Hi everyone,

I wanted ask for advice regarding the following problem.

I have a tablet PC with Intel video chipset 82852/855GM.
I need to enable on-the-fly screen rotation (a must for a tablet).
This is possible with a very recent X.org server and newest i810 video
driver. There is somebody who has managed to get this to work on
Fedora 5
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Installing_Fedora_Core_5_on_a_ThinkPad_X41_Tablet

It appears that in order to make this work on Xandros, I would have to
install the newest X.org server (ver. 7.0, I suppose). Binary package is
available in Debian unstable, but won't install on Xandros (wants
to uninstall too many things when I try).

So my only option seems to be compilation of X.org from sources.
Has anyone tried to do this on Xandros? Any potential pitfalls to avoid?
Will my Xandros installation survive such surgery? Smile

You might want to wait for Xandros 4. Xandros is releasing the specs on the new server version at the end of the month. My guess is that it will have X.org 7 in it.

I'd check the DCC Alliance to make sure, though. At least you will be a lot closer to being able to build it from source, though.

Upgrading your X server to an entirely new re-design is not recommended unless you really like rebuilding _everything_ from scratch. That means GNOME and KDE and lots of applications. Basically anything graphical.

I'd wait and let Xandros (or one of the other distros) do all of the heavy lifting. You might find some joy in maybe a Fedora or Gentoo or K/Ubuntu experimental release.
