I have finally found out how to configure a TV tuner card, thanks to a helpfull person in tech support. If you have a tv tuner card (analouge) that you can't get to work, or give you a clear picture you may need to configure it.
To configure your tv tuner card first you need to find out what numbers correspond to your card model and your tuner model (you can find out your tuner model by looking at tuner on your card (big silver thing which you plug the arial into)) by looking at this list:

If you can't find the model of your tv card, or tuner, then you'll have to find out through trial and error. There will usually be something sililarly named to your model that should work, but if there's nothing like that, the easiest way to find out is to load knoppix up, and use its "configure tv tuner card" option, to keep trying different models untill you find ones make your card, and tuner work.
Once you what numbers correspond to you card, and tuner, open text editor, and type these lines, replacing the numbers of the card and tuner, that correspond to yours:
options bttv card=37
options tuner type=5 debug=1
save the file to your home directory as "actions".
open an admisistrator file manager, and then navigate your way to /etc/modprobe.d and move the file you just made here.
next open an administrator console and type these lines in:
update-modules
rmmod bttv
modprobe bttv
you should now be able to watch tv with a program like TV time (avalable in XN).
If the image is still distorted or, the is no color and no sound etc, then may have selected the wrong tv card model.
If just get static on every station or, can't change the chanel, then you may have selected the wrong tv tuner model.
If you have a tuner that won't work under any model (such as TVision), then you will have to use some "force" options to force it to be detected at a different i2c address, but unfortunatly I'm still waiting on tech support to help me out on this one. _________________ - Missing in action, as of 16-07-06

really? thats strange, thats not supose to happen. What do you do to watch tv?
when you type "dmesg" into a console after you've got the tv working, and after you've restarted, is there any difference in the part refering to Bttv? _________________ - Missing in action, as of 16-07-06

Hi,
Thanks for the instructions - I have managed to get my old Zoltrix working (finally!), so your instructions work wonderfully.
However, I am having a terrible time trying to get a Hauppauge WinTV PVR 150 working. I chose it because a number of Linux forums and other places made the Hauppauge tuners sound almost plug-and-play, but I have had no luck getting it to work under Xandros. By the way, it works fine in WinXP, so at least I know it works.
I've tried all the Hauppauge card settings. 80 on your list seems like a perfect fit, but just in case I have tried all of them. I am pretty sure the card uses tuner type 2 (Phillips NTSC), but I couldn't get it to work so I tried all the NTSC settings with no luck. Whenever I start TVTime, it just says:
(on screen)
No signal
No video source
Cannot open capture device /dev/video0
(in console)
videoinput: Cannot open capture device /dev/video0: No such file or directory
I am now downloading Knoppix to try more configurations, but am finding this all very frustrating and at this point I don't even know if I'm on the right track - I feel like I'm stumbling around in the dark. There are also a whole bunch of postings with people talking about "ivtv", but I really don't know what that is supposed to do.
Can you provide some pointers as to what I should check to at least make sure I am on the right track? What should I be looking for while I go to know if I have done anything right? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Gareth. |

Hi gareth,
My instructions are for cards that are detected, but improperly configured. It seems like your card isn't detected at all. If you open a Konsole (Alt + F2, and type konsole), and type 'dmesg', look for reference to bttv: and copy what you see here. If you don't fidn anything, goto control centre and look under hardware detection for a cammera device, which should make reference to your tv tuner card.
WinTV cards are supported very well under Linux, and in Xandros they usually are plug and play. I've seen reports of simply moving the tuner card to a different pci slot working. It might be worth a shot. What other hardware do you have? _________________ - Missing in action, as of 16-07-06

Hi again and thanks for the reply,
I think I have figured out why I have been having so many problems. The card I have is the Hauppauge WinTV PVR 150 that uses the Conextant CS23415 chiipset instead of a BT chipset; hence why the BT drivers weren't working. There is one variation of the WinTV PVR card that does use a BT chipset (I believe the Classic), but not this one.
But what an ordeal! It's been a struggle to get this far! I also figured out that I need the ivtv drivers instead, but I haven't been able to get them installed or operating under Xandros. I am thinking of just exchanging my card for something cheaper and easier to set up!
Anyway, thanks again for you advice. I started a new thread under Multimedia to figure out ivtv, but I really appreciate your help and you got my Zoltrix card working finally!

I have an ATI TV Wonder card. Because the tuner type is incorrectly detected, the picture is black & white, and the channel numbers are off by one.
I tried the fix posted here. It didn't work. I can't find the error message in the dmesg output right now, but it was more or less that it was ignoring the tuner type I had specified because it was different from what it had detected.
I want to *override* what it detected. Any suggestions?

Hi,
I followed your well written instructions on "howto: configure your tv tuner card in Xandros 3.x"... and I do not get any signal.
My card is a WinTV PVR 250 MCE (Hauppauge).
I know my card works because I have a dual boot to Windows XP Media Center on the same computer which I used to record and view TV.
I choose :
card=10
type=2 debug=1
Any clue??
Thanks

Andyvan,
The ATI wonder card, is quite a problematice card. It probobly won't work by just following these instcructions. If you do a forum search, you may find something that will help you. I'm afraid that since I have no experience with the card I can't help much. If you still can't find anything that helps, you could try starting a new threed, and mabye some one else with the card will find it.
xmarcelo,
Was your tv tuner card detected by xandors (looked using dmesg?) before your followed these instructions? Wintv cards are usually well supported, and I'm suprised it wasn't auto detected.
I would have chose card #80, which is "wintv PVR" . There might be a model that would be more appropriate, but it wouldn't be in my list because its a bit out of date. (I would update it, but carlist isn't included in the source package anymore : ( ).
If you can't tune any station, than its most likely that you've chosen the wrong tuner type. The name should be printed directly on the tuner, on the tuner card. the sufix (ntfs, PAL etc.) corresponds to the area your tv tuner card was purchased. It's sometimes hard to tell which one it is, and may take some trial and error (you might try a google search, but manuactures often change the tuner type, so what you find might correspond to something else).
make sure you have the "options" and the bttv, and tuner words in the right place e.g.
options bttv card=80
options tuner type=2 debug=1
Hope some of this helps. _________________ - Missing in action, as of 16-07-06

hmm, I have ATI All in Wonder 128 and Xandros tuned in it perfectly. First of all my Linux's distroes that did it. Well done!
By the way; there's supposed to be a commercial SAA7134 driver on the net somewhere in a trial version too. It's in the forum somewhere. _________________ Linux user 322220. www.linuxcounter.org -- the more paper you use, the more trees are planted. |

| I followed electronics45's instruction from the very first post and absolutely nothing has happened. I have a Leadtek Winfast TV2000 XP TV Card. I cannot even open TV Time. I double click the icon and it acts like it's thinking about it, but then it just stops without opening. Shouldn't the program at least open right, even if its not configured correctly? Someone please help me out here. I'm brand new at this and I want to figure it out. Oh, by the way. I also tried to find knoppix, but couldn't find it. Where can I get that and how would I use it? Thanks. |

When tv time never starts (or you see a blue screen flicker, then dissapear), It means TV time can't find any TV devices to open.
What chipset does you card have? Is it an analog or digital tuner? (if it's digital, have a look at my other TV tuner guide).
If you type "dmesg" at the konsole (Alt + F2, then type "konsole"), can you post the lines starting with "bttv:" please?
What was the problem you had with your card before following my instructions? _________________ - Missing in action, as of 16-07-06
