Anyone looking for Firestarter:
Add this line to your source list in Xandros Networks:
deb http://www.archlug.org/apt xandros3 xorid/andrew
Let XN update & it should now show up.
Dave
bobpayne: Not sure where you got Firestarter from, but try the above source. _________________

I've installed Guard Dog on X3 OCE and it seems to work well, not interfering with a dial connection nor my LAN operation.
It may be more difficult to set up than others, but the installation instructions are clear and an excellent tutorial that leads you to a fuller understanding of why firewalls are important and how they work. |

I have never been able to get Guard Dog to work where it wasn't interfering with my ability to connect to the internet.
Maybe I needed to update my version of Guard Dog or something, but it just never did the trick for me.
When I installed Firestarter....I took it to Steve Gibson's SHIELDS UP! page, and I got a 100% Stealth rating.
Not too shabby for a free firewall.

I have downloaded Guardog here:
http://www.xandros.or.id/archive/dists/xxx/main/binary-i386/andrew/
Installed from XN with option "Install RPM"; configured and it works perfectly. I have found Xandros firewall unusable. If you loose acces to internet there is something you forgot to enable. (happened to me before. After some fiddling I got it to work)
Then go here to test it. Shields up page is :
https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2
It will test your system against hacking attemps. |

I agree its unusable.
Plus the fact that they don't give you much of a clue as to what to enable as to what not to enable make it confusing.
Firestarter doesn't ask questions, and it works really well.

The built in firewall with which Xandros 3.0 DeLuxe ships is indeed somewhat of a 'shoot yourself in the foot' device. The 'welcome screen' and 'set up connection type' are the only user friendly parts, the 'allow services' entries that you can enable seems to be double, halfway the list it starts anew. Enabling http/https/ftp/ssh/smtp/dhcp/pop/dns should be enough basically, but even as I do this a 2nd window I open in Firefox says "couldn't connect to the server". Even the Windows XP firewall is more manageable(and necessary!).
I went to the Shield Up site and got a 'stealth rating' anyway without a firewall running. But my IP adress is there for all to see which makes me uncomfortable. But using a proxy isn't something I'm comfortable with either.
See if I can anonynimity from crackers some other way _________________ You can't soar with the eagles when you're flapping with the turkeys. |

I didn't have to tell firestarter what to accept or reject, it just seemed to know.
I didn't have to configure too much...

Had to correct this one. The repository for Guarddog is all debian. So it's: install debian package.
I'm getting more respect for this distro. It's not that easy to break after all. I got most of the programs I want on my machine working.
I'm waiting for X4 and will probbably switch my main machine to it as well. For adventures I'll have Kanotix. (maybe not if X4 will be that good) |

I, too, can't access the internet with X3.0 Deluxe firewall on. I also get the double entries in the list.
My setup is DHCP through a router to cable.
UPDATE: Turned off X3 firewall and installed Guarddog. Turned on http,https,dns,ftp,pop3,smtp and now can access internet.
Used deb file from andrew's repository. |

Can you instruct me how to access the Xandros bult-in firewall? I took a look at all the online ones (Firestarter, Guarddog) and couldn't figure out what in earth to do, or what to click.
I need a firewall. Any advice is appreciated. |

OK, sorry if I seem really dense here... but I don't see any firewall for my Xandros 3.0.2. Someone said go to Launch/Applications/Internet/Firewall wizard. I don't have any firewall options. I've checked all my stuff here....
I've tried to figure out how to download the firewalls everyone is talking about (shorewall, guarddog, etc) and I just cannot make heads nor tails of them. Is there some post that has a play-by-play (in English, not Linux-geek-ese) "how-to" for installing basic programs like AV, firewall, instant messenger? I'd sure appreciate it. |
