Speechifying. Nothing like a good speech or lecture. In this day of the two second sound bite, there is still room for good lectures from peoplw with more than just a single good idea that they want to market. I have a sister in law who did just this, at first for free, then $200 and 500, now for 2500 a lecture/speech. A free talk, a newspaper spot, a website, and it just came along over a couple of years.

I'll come and see you talk!

"The twentieth century has been characterized by three developments of great political importance: the growth of democracy, the growth of corporate power, and the growth of corporate propaganda as a means of protecting corporate power against democracy."

So telling... but all of them are excellent.

But to get back on topic, I kind of suspected that Xandros would not hit 4.0 in December, as was the pattern established. Perhaps using a stable platform (?server version?) will allocate more time to refine some more interface (KDE) components for Xandros devs, plus working with KDE folks to make 4.0 a killer GUI, etc.

I'd rather see all features that we have working, and working well, instead of tripping on the cutting edge on X4.0. Besides, the speed at which new kernel development is proceeding has slowed, there won't be such a gap as there was last year...

MG

Well hang onto your hat, because I get the feeling that we have big changes in store with 4.0. Xandros is competing with Microsoft's greatest, after all.

Interesting quote. Probably explains why there are no largescale, non-commercial broadcasters in the US.

And that will get worse, since the neo-cons are trying to turn Public Broadcasting into yet another right-wing mouthpiece.

“We’re not in the business of providing news and information, We’re simply in the business of selling our customers’ products.” - Clear Channel CEO Lowry Mays

Or their customer's ideologies....

"Advertisers are being permitted to say what news is to be put on the air and who is to put it on the air."
Sponsored News (Time Magazine, January 1947)

"Under no circumstances will we sell time for news and permit the sponsors to select a broadcaster who is not wholly acceptable to us or influence the content of the broadcast"
(Edgar R. Murrow, CBS, letter in response to Time Magazine, January 1947. Right after this Murrow went along with William Paley, head of CBS who bowed to advertiser pressure to fire and thereby destroy William L. Shirer's career in broadcasting. Obviously, this is in contrast to the recent movie making Murrow into a bit of a saint.)

PBS/NPR were already somewhat commercial. Now there'll just be less reporting on neocon and commercial exploits, probably on Frontline. The rest of their shows never broke any of their own big stories, and you could kind of tell from the way they look on the Newshour... like scared chipmunks. (Contrast this with the commercial channels, where they almost bark the news at you.)

Have you heard their "Marketplace" radio program? I listened to a few shows about 2 years back and it was strictly Chicago-school "magic hand" sentiment mixed in with some unremarkable (uninformative) facts. How does the Bush admin improve on that?

It gets extremely bad when they conglomerate. Then you're dealing with a concentration of power not seen in more than 80 years.

You've got to admire the BBC though. At least the UK has a sizable chunk of their broadcasting run on a different organizational principle. Folow the money: If it's 90% commercial then you have a media monoculture and your watchdogs will be far more self-interested than observant. Obviously the same goes for a mostly state-run media market.

I'm a shortwave listener. I also suggest Radio Netherlands for good independent news. The BBC has been pressured recently by gov't regarding the content of some of their news. Radio Havana Cuba is a completely different take, as is Voice of Vietnam and Radio China International. Radio Australia sounds as American as can be, despite the accent (they are negotiating free trade with USA right now). If you live reasonably close to the Canadian border you might hear or see the CBC, which is better than most, but a shadow of its former self. All of these broadcasters are listenable on computer or on a SW radio. The least expensive one of which I have was bought for abuot $12 (US money). There's an open source-like feel to listening outside one's own country's advertiser shlock.

Thanks for the interesting pointers. Normally I read foreign news websites instead of relying on radio. You might like the Asia Times and Ohmynews (the latter's title is a play on similar-sounding Korean and English words).

On the BBC, I know there was the Greg Dyke resignation and some slight change to the Board of Governors... I guess Blair figured he could count on the oil-avarice of the commercial press, and on the BBC's timidity when its 10-year charter was coming up for renewal; Instead the BBC slapped him in the face with his own misdeeds aand increased the public's trust in them to-boot. So they are supposed to reorganize their news division and layoff people as punishment. Well guess what? They're reducing their entertainment operations (so that's where most layoffs/outsourcing is) and 'reorganizing' the news ops by expanding them! Oops! Laughing

Now, my understanding of the CBC is that its funded much like PBS: There is some commercialism, and they are reliant on the government budget. IOW, they have no right to collect a license fee independantly.

Of course, PBS also depends on charity and the CBC does not. And practically by definition the source of that charity is going to skew to the well-heeled.

So I guess I'm saying that structurally, the BBC seems better able to withstand attempts at control from the government and commercial quarters than the CBC. OTOH, the CBC does not have a massive military-industrial complex operating all around it.

Am I missing the posts speculating about X4 features and release dates, or is everyone really waiting patiently?

Now my story is that it will be released between June 15 and July 15. I hope they don't make a liar out of me again!
