.

I just received the emailed Xandros newsletter. I keep waiting to hear some news about the next release of Xandros. After the last three years, I've become conditioned to installing a new version of Xandros in December. It's the only OS in my house (two notebook PCs), and I'm convincing friends and family and business associates to use Xandros as well.

I was expecting a new release, but I haven't heard anything. I appreciate not advertising vaporware to hype a product, but has anybody heard when we might expect Xandros 4.0, and what new features it might have? Is anyone beta testing? Alpha testing?

In Xandros 4.0, I'd like greater support of non-Linux-friendly hardware (video, WiFi, mouse/keyboard controllers, audio), difficult as that is. Seamless DVD burning would be great too. Maybe some officially Xandros supported integrated video editing software (although that's probably asking too much)?

According to Ming Poon (Xandros management), "V4 is slated for some time in 2006.... I can't tell you exactly when since it will "steal the thunder" from our future press releases."

I can't imagine it will be more than a few months into 2006, but nobody outside Xandros know for sure.

As for what might be in it, you might do a Google search for DCC Alliance. A group of Debian distros are working together to make a better Linux. Xandros is the technical lead on the project. I don't know exactly what's going to be in X4, but I'd bet it's going to be good!

Thanks for the info, Jim. I knew it was a marketing decision to keep quiet and then have a big press release to generate the maximum amount of positive buzz. It's also a good business strategy, because advance notification of features leads to disappointment when one of the features doesn't quite work out. Better to withhold the feature list until the last second then go for maximum impact. But I was hoping there had been some leaks.

Hey, I'm not the enemy of Xandros marketing, trying to steal the thunder before they're ready to make the big announcement. I'm creating positive buzz before the announcement and generating market anticipation!

I'll definitely check out the DCC Allianace. Thanks for the tip. I had read a little bit about this when it was first announced, but I hadn't kept up with it at all.

Still liking your signature line.

Thanks! I've been thinking about changing it. There are so many possibilities, it's hard to choose:

“A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death.” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Our scientific power has outrun our spiritual power. We have guided missiles and misguided men. - Martin Luther King Jr., Strength to Love, 1963

“The twentieth century has been characterized by three developments of great political importance: the growth of democracy, the growth of corporate power, and the growth of corporate propaganda as a means of protecting corporate power against democracy.” - Alex Carey

“The men and women who enlist in this country’s military [should] be told the truth that they are not protecting the United States, they are and always have been protecting corporate interests.” - Chante Wolf, Veterans for Peace activist

Mankind must put an end to war, or war will put an end to mankind. - John F. Kennedy

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. - Dwight D. Eisenhower

In most communities it is illegal to cry “fire” in a crowded assembly. Should it not be considered serious international misconduct to manufacture a general war scare in an effort to achieve local political aims? - Dwight D. Eisenhower

War does not decide who is right, war decides who is left. — Bertrand Russell

Quand les riches se font la guerre, ce sont les pauvres qui meurent. — Jean-Paul Sartre (When the rich make war, it’s the poor that die.)

Any nation’s attempt to dictate to other nations their form of government is indefensible. - Dwight Eisenhower

This is the first age that’s ever paid much attention to the future, which is a little ironic since we may not have one. — Arthur C. Clarke

More than any other time in history, mankind faces a crossroads. One path leads to despair and utter hopelessness. The other, to total extinction. Let us pray we have the wisdom to choose correctly. — Woody Allen

We shall require a substantially new manner of thinking if mankind is to survive. - Albert Einstein

The environment is everything that isn't me. - Albert Einstein

The pioneers of a warless world are the young men (and women) who refuse military service. - Albert Einstein

Unthinking respect for authority is the greatest enemy of truth. - Albert Einstein

It is dangerous to be right when the government is wrong. - Voltaire

Our upside down welfare state is "socialism for the rich, free enterprise for the poor." The great welfare scandal of the age concerns the dole we give rich people. - William O. Douglas [this may have originated with Martin Luther King, Jr.]

Civil government, so far as it is instituted for the security of property, is in reality instituted for the defense of the rich against the poor, or of those who have some property against those who have none at all. - Adam Smith, 1776, Wealth of Nations

If the machine of government is of such a nature that it requires you to be
the agent of injustice to another, then, I say, break the law. - Henry David Thoreau

Healthy discontent is the prelude to progress. - Mohandas Gandhi

What do I think of Western civilization? I think it would be a very good idea. - Mohandas Gandhi

From now on it is only through a conscious choice and through a deliberate policy that humanity can survive. - Pope John Paul II

The greatest purveyor of violence in the world today is my own government, for the sake of the hundreds of thousands trembling under our violence... I cannot remain silent. - Martin Luther King Jr.

You can't say that civilization don't advance, however, for in every war they kill you in a new way. - Will Rogers

"The invasion of Iraq, I believe, will turn out to be the greatest strategic disaster in US history." - Lt. General William Odom, Retired, former head of the National Security Agency.

"Anticipate charity by preventing poverty." - Maimonides

The man who doesn't read good books has no advantage over the man who can't read them. - Mark Twain

"Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it." - Mark Twain

Religion is what keeps the poor from murdering the rich. - Napoleon Bonaparte

Destroying rainforest for economic gain is like burning a Renaissance painting to cook a meal. - Edward O. Wilson

And now all my lies are proved untrue.
And I must face the men I slew.
What tale shall serve me here among
Mine angry and defrauded young. - Rudyard Kipling
____________

So much wisdom, from so many different sources. How do you pick just one for a signature line? My personal choice is of course influenced by what's happening in the world (and in my world) at a given moment. Matters of war are a big one to me at the moment, for obvious reasons.

Lots of good thoughts, a couple still have me wondering WTF, but this one stands out in my mind:

Unthinking respect for authority is the greatest enemy of truth. - Albert Einstein

Einstein was pretty cool, wasn't he? If all you think when you think of Einstein is E=mc2, you really don't know Einstein!

I really haven't studied Einstein, but if that quote is typical of him, then I need to learn more about him.

But then, I've always questioned "authority "

A couple of other favorite Einstein quotes, although more technical than political:

Imagination is more important than knowledge.

Everything should be as simple as it can be, but no simpler.

WIll Rogers said a lot that was quotable, too. In addition to the one listed above, my all time favorite is:

Be glad you aren't getting all the government you're paying for.

My, this thread took a severe off-topic turn. I guess there isn't much to be said about Xandros 4.0 when so little is known.

This thread is in the tradition that continues to demonstrate to the world that Xandros users have unusual savoir faire, intelligent brains, thoughtful ways, and, I'm sure this is true for most of us, are unusually handsome, beautiful and sexy. Wink

One of them that really stands out for me is Mark Twain:

"The man who doesn't read good books has no advantage over the man who can't read them."

It took a long time for the significance of it to creep up on me, though. I personally never met Mark Twain, or Albert Einstein, or Dwight Eisenhower, or Napoleon Bonaparte, or Gandhi, or any of the others from whom I have collected bits of wisdom. And you'll see that in other threads I have written at length about global warming and other subjects on which I am quite knowledgeable. Where do I get all this information?

I read!

As Twain says, this gives me a tremendous advantage over those who cannot or will not read.

Turn your damned TV off! Go to the library and get a book. Read it!

I think Matty said that Xandros 4 will use the same core as the server which is in beta testing right now. So the testing of V4 has kind of already started then. And if the core is the one of a server, I think we can expect stability and forget about the bleeding edge...

I like stability. In Xandros 3.0, we seemed to have a somewhat better compromise than we had in earlier releases. Xandros 3.0 was stable, but had more up-to-date components. At least, it seemed that way to me. Hopefully, that's another sign that Linux in general is maturing, and in increasingly specific order, so is Debian and Xandros. As such, the DCC Alliance looks like even more of a good thing.

It certainly sounds like we're not getting a December Xandros release, unlike previous years? I know the good folks at Xandros have had their hands full lately (although they always did).

I needed to burn some DVDs. I think I bought the LaCie USB DVD recorder back during the summer and never used it? I gave up on Xandros 4.0 with the hope of integrated DVD burning in time to help me, and I just installed K3B. No DEB or RPM that seemed to work, so I compiled from source. Lengthy (it's a big complex application), but very straight forward. I'll provide a usage report in a more appropriate thread.
