I have finally finished my complete transition from Windows to Linux today with the release of WineX 3 pre-release. One of my personal Holy Grail pieces of software is the game Starsiege Tribes from Dynamix. I had just about given up hope of ever playing it again as I no longer use or run any version of Windows and refuse to do so because of my strong personal feelings that to do so is to further help keep Gates and Microsoft in control of our digital lives.
It has been possible for quite a while to load Tribes but with the exception of one of the early versions of Wine (GPL version) there has always been a problem with keyboard activation causing Tribes to crash in Linux. As long as you used the mouse it would hum along just fine, but as soon as you touched any key on your keyboard...instant crash.
Well i'm very happy to report that Winex 3 seems to have fixed that issue with Tribes. I spent a couple of happy fragging hours this afternoon becoming reacquainted with my favorite game of all time..Tribes.
If you are a Tribes fan and wish to try this you will of course need the Transgaming version of Winex 3 that was just released. Winex 3 pre-release is a test version and I did experience a couple of glitches that are not too hard to get around. First download the slightly older version of Winex. There are .deb versions available to Transgaming subscribers and you will possibly need both versions on your system. (A subscription is a whole 5 bucks a month) I had to use the older version to do the actual installs and updates for Tribes. For some reason the newer version couldn't seem to do the install/updates of Tribes, so the older version may also have to be used in your case. YMMV
Once you have Tribes installed and updated to version 1.11 use your newer Winex 3 version to actually start and play the game. I found that the first version of Tribes (1.0) would only allow me to use software rendering, but upon finishing all of the updates, I was able to switch my system to use OpenGL in full-screen mode with no problem. I ended up running Tribes in OpenGL at 1280x1024 and it looked as good as it used to in WIndows. The only other issue I saw was a bit of sound stutter but it was not too extreme to distract from my playing enjoyment. Hopefully the final version of Winex 3 will correct these issues.

Updates for Tribes are available at the following address:

So my fellow Linux gamers, now is the time to gather the forces and invade yet another formerly Windows only battlefield where we will lay waste to the evil Windows hordes! Twisted Evil

Ok, I have moved the discussion to this post where it makes most sense to have it. I have a feeling, based on your other posts, that you are not getting the idea here very well.
Your problem is quite obvious. You do not appear to be running WineX. You are trying to use Wine. Note the missing "X". WineX is from http://www.transgaming.com. GO THERE NOW.
When you are back take a look the following site the home of Wine. (note no "X")
http://www.winehq.org

These are two completely separate versions of the open source effort called Wine. One comes from Transgaming and the other comes from WineHQ. The one from Transgaming is the one that will run Starsiege Tribes. The one from WineHQ will run Starsiege Tribes but has problems with keyboard input.
From your post here and the other post in the games section it appears that you are running the WineHQ version. IT WILL NOT WORK.

As I said in my first post here about Tribes, I am using the version from Transgaming called Winex pre release 3. This is available by subscription only. It costs $5 dollars a month to subscribe to Transgamings version of WineX.

It does work for me. In fact I just got done with a 3 hour frag session playing Strasiege Tribes. Please reread my first post regarding Tribes very carefully as it describes how I successfully set it up. Again YOU MUST BE USING WINEX for it to work. (NOT WINE)

A couple of questions for you Gibbz

1. Did you subscribe to Transgaming?

2. If the answer to the above was yes, did you find the download area for subscribers?

3. If the answer to the above was yes, did you find the Deb files in the download area?

4. If the answer to the above was yes, did you download both deb versions of WineX as I suggested in my first post about Tribes?

5. If the answer to the above was yes, did you install the older WineX first and the pre release version second?

If your answers to the above were all yes you should have 2 versions of Winex on your system. One is started by typing "winex" and the newer one is started by typing "winex3" (with no quotes of course)

It does not sound as though you have the Transgaming files I suggested you use. Where did the files you thought were WineX come from?
Anyway, to play Tribes as I described you will need the real files from Transgaming. I use them for Tribes, Unreal and American McGee's Alice. All of those games are Windows versions and they play quite well in Xandros.

I have never tried using that route as I am a Transgaming subscriber. I figure that by subscribing I am helping the people who created WineX stay in business and feed themselves. In turn they release WineX in a nice prepackaged .deb file that installs with no problem in Xandros so I can get straight to playing my games without screwing around with compiling etc.

Yes, he's using the cvs version of winex, which is still wine. It's good for a tryout but it's less complete than the subscriber version. The changes for winex3-pre may not be in CVS, I've no idea.
