What is it that you want to install? There is lots of stuff available through Xandros Networks, which really makes it safe and easy to install software. No need to do any compiling when you can use Xandros Networks!

I assume (and hope!) you're using Xandros Networks to install software? If so, you can be sure that it is indeed installed, unless you got some kind of error message.

But not every package will automatically add itself to the Launch menu, or put a shortcut on the desktop. You often have to do that manually. To add to the Launch menu, right click on the Launch button, click Menu Editor. Navigate to where you want the shortcut to be in the Launch menu, for example if I were going to add a game I'd click on the Game folder. Then click on the New Item button, a dialog box will pop up; enter the name of the new program. Now either enter the path to the program into the Command: box, or click on the folder icon next to it and navigate to the new program and select it. Programs are usually installed into /usr/bin, look there first. Now click on the icon that looks like a floppy disk to save the changes to the menu, and you're in business.

You can also add a shortcut to the desktop. Right click on the desktop, click Add New, Shortcut, and follow the wizard.

If you're using Xandros Networks to install programs, it will automatically remove the package files when it's done. If you don't want it to do that, you can use Synaptic or apt-get or other program to install new programs. I almost always use Xandros Networks.

If you're installing programs you've downloaded somewhere else on the web and not from the official Xandros repositories, you need to know that it is possible to break your system by installing the wrong things. Some programs will change your current install, and applications you had previously installed may not function any more.
So stick to the official Xandros repositories whenever possible, and if you have to install a program you got from somewhere else, you should "pin" your system. Do a search for pinning on the Forums, it's been discussed several times.

I hope I answered your questions.

Jim
